Shocks driving me nuts!

I have a 1990 944 S2 - does anyone know the right answer to my sloppy front end?! I cant seem to get two answers that match as to manufacturer and or whether I need just shocks, springs or the full assembly.....please help!!

Springs don't normally wear out. Shocks do, and rubber suspension bushes do. I changed all my shocks after 150,000 miles with standard ones from Berlyn Services (I believe he has some front S2's at £99 just now) and it transformed the car [:D]

Have tried to check both Sachs and Koni but the main issue is that I cant get a straight answer to my question...... I have however been told that springs rarely go wobbley so thanks for the back-up D944...much appreciated!

OK so I think I only need shocks....does this mean the strut assembly can be taken apart and the shocks replaced?

Think I need a drink....

Hopefully this won't confuse you too much.

The original shocks are made by Sachs and the spring attaches around them then bolts onto the car. See the Garage Shop Manual at www.clarks-garage.com for a guide to removing and replacing (you'll need a good spring compressor)

Koni do an insert which will fit inside the original Sachs shock and is much firmer and also adjustable. However you need to take a hacksaw to the original shock and empty the oil so that the insert will fit inside. Take a look at www.paragon-products.com and you will see this in their Koni section. They also have a good online guide showing how to hacksaw the original. Alternatively they will send you a shock already inserted and you send your old shock back to them. They are a US company so you will have to pay 17.5% vat plus about 5% import duty on top of their price

The strut containing the shock and spring can be removed from the car and dismantled (once the spring has been compressed)

On earlier models the shock(damper) could then be broken down further and an insert replaced. On later models this cannot be done unless you saw open the strut as detailed by Paul above.

Both the 944's I owned were greatly improved by the addition of new shocks. On my turbo I went further and fitted techart front springs which lowered and stiffened it at the front.
It is worth changing the fronts and rears together as the rears are relatively cheap and easier to fit.

Bon Soir,

mmmm...nuns...fighting?

Nope, can't help with the front end, no idea. Intrigued by the nuns though, met some monks at Battle Classic Car show. Eight 944s all parked on Harolds grave, made the monks frown.

Nuns mmmm...nice
