Shop around for a better build date?

OK, I am officially annoyed now. A guy in the US just placed a Turbo order in June and got a July build slot!

I on the other hand have been waiting 4 months and have another 8 to go.[]

So given my OPC promised they would 'do their best' to consolidate their orders and try to get me something by Christmas, I am now thinking this isn't going to happen unless I take some more proactive steps myself.

As such I am thinking of contacting every OPC in the country to say 'my business is yours if a 2007 build spot opens up'.

This will likely annoy my current OPC should I move but frankly it should be their job to source me an acceptable build slot, not mine, so I am caring less and less.

Does anyone see any issues with me making such a broadcast?

Hmmm, seems I have answered my own question...

After talking to several dealerships they all seem to say the same thing - that I need to keep pressing my existing OPC for THEM to source me an earlier slot.

If I try to move to a different OPC then I would affectively be starting from the bottom of the queue again and nearly all OPCs have at least a 12 month waiting list for MY08 TT Coupes.

Those slots that do then become free would be filled by a rolling queue system ie. everyone in the queue would move up one. If you don't have a deposit down with the other OPC then you aren't even in the queue.

So unless I want to hedge my bets by putting £100k worth of deposits down across 10 OPCs then looks like I will just have to wait and see what happens.

Alex, I went through the same thing as yourself after the OPC screwed my deal up, they came (sort of) good in the end but I did ask other OPC's. Their response was simialr to what they have told you.

I would however let the other OPCs that you want to deal with know that your in a position to take a late order .. you never know...

You do get the odd spec'd new car become available if you are not overly fussed about having spec'd it yourself.. For this you would need to be in constant contact with a few opc's. I would choose one OPC from a few different dealer groups and keep in touch with them.

I have been offered two this year.

I had this issue when ordering my GT3, I would recommend phoning Porsche HQ (Andrew McIndoe?) & see if you can get an improved allocation date, they have the full picture from all dealers.
What is strange is the allocations aren't equal for each dealer, it depends on their catchment area, how long they have been established & probably how well they work with head office.
There is no doubt that others who ordered their GT3 after me got the car earlier from their "larger" OPC than I did from my smaller garage!

The only good news is if the supply time is long residuals will be good!
Of course you could always buy a nice lightly used example have it now & save some money[;)]

[:-]Edited to add now from £94k pre-negotiation from... OPC's & £88/89 outside the network!

Well I just spoke with my OPC to try to fix a meeting with my new Sales rep for tomorrow.

Ended up by being reprimanded by head sales guy saying he'd heard I'd called other OPCs to see if they could get me an earlier slot, and that they had taken my money in good faith blah blah blah"¦

What's it come to where you give a company 6 figures worth of business, they ignore you for several months, then get upset with you for just "˜looking' into other possibilities "" ie. doing their jobs for them.

Surely they should be trying to keep me happy; not p*ss me off []

A Turbo is not worth an extra £50k over my Carrera, a 12 month wait PLUS agro along the way! Hmmmmm"¦.

Alex, calmly tell them, Yes you are correct and I have called other dealers aswell.... If you cannot supply my requirements then I quite happy to look further afield.

I learnt a hard lesson from a salesman... its not a Porsche car he sells its money/profit for himself and his company.
Looking at it from that angle it makes it much easier to be on their level, I assure you thats how they will be when the boots on the other foot...
I do however appreciate the position your in with the current dealer, I was in the same.... and sadly the boot was on the other foot, where they told me they didn't care if I cancelled my order, there were plenty of other people ready to take my place[] and I had a delivery date at that point !!!

How about checking with a couple of dealers in continental Europe ? I don't know what lead times are like for a C-16 UK spec car over there, but in your position it can't hurt to enquire. You might even save some money, some might even offer you a discounts off list price..

Putting a deposit down with a dealer seems to limit the options. The answer is to shop around for the best delivery date first, then place an order. May help for next time. [8|]

Slightly off topic, how reliable are dealers when giving you a build / delivery date? My dealer tells me the 997S I ordered in April will be built on the 29th August and with the dealer 20 days later, with me 3/4 days after that. Can I rely on that much?

you can always phone porsche gb in reading for a up date on you car build, i did when i had ordered 997s cab back in 05 also i was able to find out when it was in the uk

Past exprience with my OPC is that they are pretty accurate [:D], 4 moths isn't much of a lead time. Mine was built in Feb for March delivery and I had a full 6 months wait - feels like forever while you are waiting though
