Short/quick shift kit

Has anybody fitted a short/quick shift kit?
Are they any good?
Are they easy to fit?


Yes many on here have fitted short shift kits inc myself.
Yes they are good, but so is a well sorted standard linkage.(good bushes etc)
They are not easy to fit, but they are not difficult if you are competent, or have the gearbox out.

There are different types available and the quality of the engineering varies.
 
Quite a few of us run short shift kits, it's worth doing a search as it should bring up quite a few threads. I like mine (supplied by Type911) and is great for a track car and fast road use, but I have no desire to fit one to my 944S which surprised me, but then that car is used for more gentle road driving. The only real downsides are that it will increase shift effort and any feeling of notchiness. They're pretty easy things to fit, so probably worth a try.

A Great cheap mod but if its one that goes on the gear box then its best fitted on ramp with air tools around you....
 
As Peter says, not difficult to fit. I have one and rather than describe the fitting as difficult I'd describe it as fiddly - although keep in mind that I did mine on the driveway with just the rear nearside wheel off and the car sitting on an axle stand.

The difference the mod made is huge though. It's now a pleasure to rifle through the gears and due to the kit I chose (after recommendations on here) it cost less than £50.
 
Yes great mod , if a little fiddly to get at. as its it sat right on the top of the gearbox....Easy to get off IF all the bolts + connections are "loose" BUT if the linkage is rusted to the gearbox selector shaft then its a pain....I hope youve got small hands......??????

Not too worried about getting the nuts and bolts off they are bound to be rusted and stuck! thats part of the fun! isnt it[&:]?

Fair point, and one which I overlooked at half 2 yesterday morning! A night on the sauce then posting was bound to lead to oversights!

So, with hindsight mine was a fiddly thing to fit even with the advantage of the bolts being loosened off/undone previously by a very reputable specialist.

This was the kit I bought for under £50 delivered although I did need to do a little work on it to make it perform properly (Mike cut it down to size, I freed the joint which had been compressed incorrectly at some stage):

I know others on here have used the same kit. Some have had as much trouble, some have had less. Now mine is fitted I'm very happy with it and it still performs faultlessly.

You have the same one fitted as I do, mine needed modification before fitting but it does work quite sweetly. I will be interested to compare how yours feels (carefully avoiding knob puns[:D][:D][:D]) as there are times when changing down, 3rd-2nd in mine feels a little clunky.

 
What part needed modification or to be cut? Does it replace the rod on the top-side of the gearbox? If so dont forget to put the grub screw back in..........Dont ask how I know.
 
Mine needed the shaft cutting down a bit to allow the linkage to actually move, and I seem to remember Peter re-sited one of the holes on his achieving the same effect (I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong).

Yes it does replace the linkage that sits on top of the gearbox. The grub screw is definitely in mine with a good dollop of loctite.

You say don't ask, but I'm intrigued - what happened when you didn't replace the grub screw?
 
I re-sited the hole where the grub screw fits to get mine to work.

If you do not re tighten the grub screw propely (or it works lose) it gets very difficult to get gears, I discovered this after a hill climb event and limped home with only 1st 3rd and 5th and no reverse.
 
Mine is on its way from the US of A at the moment. I am currently spraying all the nuts and bolts with wd40 daily to hopfully give me a chance! It would be very usefull if some one who has modified theirs could post me a picture so i can see which bits have been modified/cut down/moved. Im obvously going to fit it as is when it turns up just incase it works! Many thanks to everybody for the advice (esp Wigeon Incognito for the heads up on the £50 one from america)[:D]

No pictures as it is on the car, but when you get it you will see where the grub screw fits on the shaft, On mine and Matts (I think) the grub screw hole is about 1cm out of position, I got around it by boring a new hole in the correct position, you will be able to tell when you take the old linkage off where the hole should be by comapring the old and new side by side.(It maybe it is designed for LHD cars not RHD as ours are)
 
Well if the grub screw is not tight your gear change gets longer and longer until you can't get any gears. This is most likely to happen when it's raining and you are in your favorite shirt and on a very busy duel carriageway with no hard shoulder!
You then have to lie in the gutter half under the car trying to screw the thing back in but you cant by hand so all you manage to do is jam it in 2nd gear, while keeping an eye on trunks swerving round you at the last second. Then drive the 5 miles home in 2nd gear on fast A roads with hazards flashing at a top speed of 25mph.
