Short Shift again

Sorry about this but out of all the short shift levers which one can you use the original gear knob with?

OK thnaks so which ones are the best? I remember reading about a ??? Mitchell gear lever that everyone was very pleased with, do you have a website I can go to?

I have just received my Jon Mitchell version suited to both road and track. He has a strictly race version too. I have been pursuing a short shift kit for what seems like ages and settled on this by reputation and speaking to Jon himself. He seems like a really nice bloke on the phone. Try him on the abovementioned site 9xx. The product looks very well made and I'll report back in a few days once I've got it installed and sorted.

Thanks for this, do you have a price from Jon, I haven't managed to get hold of him yet?
Type 911 is £110, is this one easy to fit?

I couldn't say for definite as I didn't do the work, but my garage didn't mention (or charge me for!) any hassle. Just recently I did have a slight problem with the grub screw coming loose but as I've reused the kit a few times its not surprising really and seemed to just need a bit of thread lock to keep it there. Its been fine ever since.

Best regards,
Peter.

Pete, is yours one that installs onto the gearbox itself, which I assume needs the gearbox dropping or loosening to install, or one the ones that simply replaces the gear lever?

Jon's one is transmission mounted and is approx 110 pounds. That's currency not weight, I don't have the pounds symbol on my keyboard. I wouldn't bother with the shortened lever as this is just a band-aid solution. Jon's also has adjustment possible.

Had a short burst with the new kit. It feels much tighter as it eliminates all the bushings in the linkage. May go out a bit later on when there's less traffic although the police will be out as we have a big game of Rugby League on at the moment so they will be out in 'force' to catch the drink drivers. Yes I know you guys are all into your soccer but there are 60,000 + watching our State of Origin at the ground so no apologies for League. Oh by the way go the Socceroos...only got some minnow of a side next at the World Cup. Brazil I think they are known as. Easy win!

Hi Scott,
It can be fitted without removing the gearbox, I think I had an hours labour or less to fit it originally, but I certainly wouldn't want to do it without access to ramps.

Best regards,
Peter.

I spoke to Jon and he quoted me £150 for the part and 3 hours labour to fit, I now have concerns and might go with type911 for £110 and fit it myself (most probably with a lot of cursing).
I also here a non short shift direct replacement improves the feel as well, I have about an inch of play in gear at the moment.

When you say a non short shift direct replacement, do you mean just replacing it with a new stock model? You will gain some improvement if you replace your old gear lever as they do wear over time.
I've just come back from a bit of a test run with the new kit fitted and all in all a great improvement. It may need a minor adjustment which is available or it may be me that needs to get used to it. It feels just tighter with about 30% less play than a normal somewhat worn model. The shifts themselves don't feel incredibly shorter although maybe 15-20% but just more precise. Thus far I'm very happy. The test will come Sunday week at the track where it counts!

Might be worth reading this old thread http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=52870&mpage=1&key=linkageì¼€

The quick shift makes a considerable difference. Two golden rules;

1. Use a commercial grade threadlock compound or preferably wire lock
2. Lubricate the entire linkage, especially the rose joint, with motorcycle chain lube

Jon Mitchell also supplies re-engineered gear leavers (used to be on an exchange basis) that have upgraged fulcrum pins fitted and other mods. These also tighten up the gear change, especially useful in conjunction with the quick shift kit as above

Finally, there is a nylon bushing that the pivot ball at the base of the shift leaver pivots in. Very cheap (OPC) and easy to fit while you're doing the other works.

Both WUF and baby WUF are modified as above and those that have driven them will (probably) testify to how good the shift feels. I fitted the original gearbox linkage on the ground (bank holiday weekend so no ramp access, but I couldn't wait to try it), but fitting on a ramp is significantly easier. It is in the bounds of DIY

The final result makes the 944 gear change in to what it should have felt like and considerably better than my original one year old 944 did in 1984. It's not a cheap modification to go the whole way, and won't give a performance improvement, but your driving enjoyment will increase considerably.

HTH

Did that include a refurbed front end as well?
