Short Shift and Black Wheels

Had a little play on the configurator today, as plan is still to go for a facelift Cab.

Can anybody tell me exactly what the short shift is mechanically, I'm assuming it's not simply a shorter lever?

Also, I was trying to spec Basalt black painted wheels with the Basalt black car but the configurator didn't like that. Was it operator error or something more sinister?

With regards to t he short shift - it does what it says on the tin - its a shorter throw between gears by about 25% or so. So you can now change gears witha wrist action without any movement forwards and backwards through your elbow.

In reality it provides much more mechanical feeling changes - most owners seem to desrcibe 2nd - 3rd as feeling like a rifle bolt action. The gain quicker, more definate gear shifts when the oil is warm, the loss - its a bit of a pig whent he gear box oil is cold forget trying to get into 1st in winter until your oil warms up.

I currently have a short shift on my car, going back to a normal shift on a 997 it feels comparitively woolly and imprecise

However it is definately an agressive box for press on driving - maybe not the character I would go for in a Cabrio. personal taste and all that.

Hope this helps you make your choice

Excellent description [:D]

when driven hard the short shift really is a great benefit... otherwise as already said it can lead to stiff notchy gear changes... not something that feels wrong, but when cold can be a little annoying.

I do have to say though that I thought the standard 997 shift had a great smooth and precise feel to it.

Julio your only problem on the configurator is that with basalt exterior it's cheaper to select 'body colour painted wheels' than to order the basalt wheel option - hence it doesn't let you select basalt wheel with a basalt exterior.

Please avoid the yellow wheels though !

Basalt black with black wheels.....my choice too!

Rodney,

Very nice.

I shied away from Basalt Black wheels (my car is basalt black) only because I was sure they were harder to maintian and would show up minor scuffs more. Whats your experience of them to live with?

Still look something special though

Hi Tom,

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't really know yet. I've only had the car a couple of weeks and the alloys are pristine. Also because I've got PCCBs there's not much brake dust so I haven't had to do any maintenance work on them yet.

I do know that they can easily be touched up using touch up paint, or better 2 pack paint.
Have a word with Bob Spratley (Bobsprats - GT3 forum) he's got experience with touching up his GT3RS wheels and can advice you best.
