Short shift gear change?

I drove an S2 with a short shift recently and it was excellent!!

Hence why I'm having one fitted in a couple of weeks when my S2 goes in for its next round of mechanical fettling.

Very nice but, perhaps one of the dirtiest jobs you could undertake on a 944.

Try a Jon Mitchell refurbished gear shift shaft first. You will be stunnned how much slop that removes from the linkage.

Where would I get this from please John?
ORIGINAL: John Sims

Not necessarily Tony. Patrick has tried a couple of kits before trying a new stock linkage and preferred the stock linkage. I think we can forgive our cars for having lost the gearchange precision after 20yrs!! I know i'm not quite as sharp as I was 20yrs ago!

I haven't tried the short shift kits, but the difference in mine after having a new standard linkage and new bushes was phenomenal - when warm it is now lovely to use and even when cold, it is far less 'sticky'.

I have to say that I had 2 types and they were both from Jon Mitchell. The first one we didn't install correctly but that was the short road kit. Then I got the race kit and while it did really shorten the throw and certain changes were really good, in general I find that a good refurbished stock setup is no slower through the gate and in fact probably day in day out, faster of all things. It's a pretty cheap way to find out by freshening up your old stock ones as they do grow old and loose. Feels like you're tossing the salad sometimes [:D]. Also to bear in mind especially for you UK boys, the short shifters don't seem to like the cold and I had some pretty nasty grinds especially from 1st to 2nd some mornings. Ouch []. Another really cheap and cheerful mod is to just shorten your shifter itself. I know that this doesn't affect the linkage itself but your hand doesn't actually move as far as to give the illusion of a shorter shift and I guess that's what all this fuss is about. [;)]

How much have you guys been able to source new standard linkages for?

I had a brief look but they seemed to be North of £100, whereas my short shift kit was less than £50 delivered from the States so it seemed a logical route to take (my linkage is worn out rather than me doing it for performance reasons).
