Short Shift Kit.

Pete at Motorprep put a short shift kit on Beaky today. What a pig of a job; rather him than me.

My change was prompted by what I thought was slack in the original linkage, meaning the car would slip out of 3rd gear when cold. There was evidence of the original linkage moving on the shaft, so my diagnosis seems correct, and it seems not to slip out of gear now. Fingers crossed on that one.

And what about the shift?

2-3-4 is great, 4-3 is good as is 5-4 or 5-3. Going into 2 is a bit of a sod, but then it was previously. Because of the reduction in leverage one is very aware of the spring on 1 and 2 and this requires some fairly deliberate effort. There is very little side to side motion so neutral isn't as obvious as it was and selecting 1st requires a degree of knack or precision.

The cross linkage had to be shortened as far as it would go as, initially, the gear stick was so far over to the left that 1 and 2 were unavailable. Pete and I are wondering if the linkage was incorrectly machined as the grub screw hole on the shaft connection wouldn't allow the inserted shaft tail to sit vertically, if that makes sense. The result of this is the stick is angled to the left when in its neutral position. Further consultation with the supplier may be necessary on this.

The original link is full of rubbery bushes where as the replacement is all rose-jointed. As you would imagine the feel of the new shift is very precise, almost harshly so. I have no doubt that I will get used to it, and learn to love it more after some use. It isn't a mod I would necessarily rave over in the first instance though.

All I can say is Pete did a spectacular job and, as always, kept good cheer; even when removing the shifter for the fourth time for adjustment - as it can't be done in situ.

Many thanks to Pete. He remains highly recommended for any modification works in my books.

Which linkage did you buy?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I went with Weltmeister and (a first for their parts in my experience) it doesn't fit. The problem with mine is that the hole is fractionally too small for the shaft so I need to get it machined out very slightly. Other than that it looks like it might foul the fuel tank which being plastic won't respond to a bit of persuasion.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It's a pig of a job working up there though as you say.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

It came from Type911in Kent (020 8402 8424) £136.30 delivered.

I looked at the Weltmeister linkage but, after reading the fixing instructions, wasn't so keen on the "bending"of the original linkage bit. The Type911 is the complete linkage including the cross rail where as, IIRC the Welmeister retains the original cross rail (even if you do have to bend it).

My choice was finally sealed by Mr Cannell who has the Type911 on Wuf and Baby Wuf.

As noted above, I'm not sure that my linkage was quite perfect as, while it all works, it seems too much of an effort to get 1st and 2nd gear, and the stick doesn't return to the vertical. I believe the grub screw recess in the shaft tail is just in the wrong place, but I will phone Type911 for their comments.

Hey chaps
Ive just fitted a SSK on my S2,, well not me but Hartech did the job, when they did a gearbox re-build...So it was a whole heap easier to fit as the box was on the bench..[;)][;)]
I got the SSK from 944 racing in the USA.. Defo NOT £136 in fact less than half that figure....
+ yes John it does exactly the same between 3rd + 2nd... In fact its a bit of a pain , but im getting used to it...now...
I must admit though its WAY better than it was b4. the o/all gearchange that is.....A LOT more precise...
Im glad i got one fitted.... So much so in fact ive gone + got one on the 968 cab... + thats a very smooth change.. Aparently because the gearbox has some "neddle" bearings in the 68 box that the 44 ones dont have...So ive been reliably informed...[;)][;)]
So if any of you other "modders" are wanting to fit one .. Get it done ,, its an improvement....[;)][:D][;)][:D]

Pah - I replaced (or rather JZ Machtech did) the shift linkage on my S2 with a standard Porsche one and it made a world of difference after 15 years of shifting.

I don't hold with this modifying lark - keep it standard I say [;)]

I think you are quite right. I don't think Mrs Smith would have liked the quickshift kit. [;)]

I went out for a play this afternoon, and it is starting to grow on me now. [:)]

Hey John
When i first had this kit fitted , I thought there was something wrong with my gearbox...
But it seems like all 944,s that have a SSK fitted suffer from the "baulking" between 3rd + 2nd.....
Im getting used to mine now....

I used the standard one as well and it was a big improvement, over the very worn original.
