Short Shift/Sports Chrono - PSE

I have recently changed from a 996 C4S to a 2008 997S (Gen 1) and I am really pleased with the car. It is fantatstic to drive, slightly more powerful than the 996 and more sophisticated at the same time with the benefit of PASM etc.

However, I have two points that I would appreciate feedback on:

Short Shift - the car is fitted with a short shift and after 3 weeks and a few hundred miles I am still not sure whether I like it or not. Reading the threads on this I see there are mixed views. The question is will I get to like it more if I stick with it and if not can it be replaced with the normal change and if so at what cost?

Sports Chrono/PSE - I enjoy having the PSE on but do not really like the revised ECU mapping with the sharpened throttle response. Is it possible to modify this so you can have the benefit of the PSE on the Sport switch without the revised throttle mapping?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Welcome to the 997 [:)]

As you're already aware there is a mixed response to the short shift on the 997.
The standard shift is shorter than the 996 anyhow, but much smoother.

On cold morning and short drives I do sometimes think the same as yourself, however if I've had a day 'playing' on some great roads or even a track the short shift is fabulous and I don't doubt the option for a second.
I'd seriously take a look at how you use and drive the car and then decide from there...

Not sure on the PSE question, many have already done the bypass and locked the PSE on, thus negating the chrono issues you mention.
I would add that like above the chrono takes a while to get used to with the remap and hardened limiter [:'(] but it does work..

I had short shifter on my Gen 1 and, after the early, cold morning "stickiness" (1st to 2nd seemed the worst) had cleared I loved it.
Interesting what you say about the sport "on" settings. Personally I preferred the sharper throttle response and, of course, the PSE but it was the harder ride with the PASM that I nearly always had to de-select, especially with the road surfaces down my way![:(]
Of course, as posted here on other threads, it is possible to have the PSE on all the time without selecting "Sport".

Hi Terry,

I had a normal shift, PSE but no Sports Chrono on my Gen1.

The Gen2 I recently picked up has Sports Shift and Sports Chrono.

I like the Sports Shift, cold mornings are a pain, but a tickle on the throttle helps to change down and once warmed up it feels really nice.

The Sports Chrono, I like the one button does all and like Alan (tscaptain) I tend to select Sports and de-select the harder PASM. Intention is to get the PSE on the Gen2 when available, but I will be performing the brown plug modification to ensure it stays loud all the time. [:)]

As for the rest of Sports Chrono, the stopwatch, etc, not bothered at all. In fact the stopwatch, at night, tends to give me a reflection on the windscreen that is not desired at all. I probably wouldn't spec it again to be honest.

Search for other threads on the PSE. You can disconnect something in the engine bay so that PSE is always on so you can keep the magical sports button for when you want that kind of ride. Whilst I enjoy Sports very much it isn't for everyday driving as it can be quite sharp and jerky
 
As per every one else's comments there are threads on the site telling you how to set the sports exhaust to permanently on, apparently it is quite easy to do.

Short Shift seems to be a bit like marmite (I hate marmite but love the short shift) - So ultimately you'll have to make your own mind up. I went from normal gearboxes on my previous Porsche's to Short Shift on this and it took some getting used to.

First proper run out though I was hooked - yes its a bit graunchy in the cold morning to warm but frankly until the gear box oil is warm you should be treating it gently irrespective of which box you have.

One good long run with like minded souls (997 register) converted me as the action is so much more positive and precise, the shortness of it and more mechanical feel makes you feel much more connected to the car, and slotting second to third is a joy - its almost a rifle bolt type action.

Chrono again took getting used to, the revs rise and fall much more directly to the throttle input. After 18 months I now leave it in sports mode with PASM set to normal for all but long motorway drives.

I found the Chrono and short shift made it the car I always hoped it would be, without them I might have been slightly disappointed.
 
I appreciate the responses, the short shift is starting to feel more intuitive each day so I guess I will become a convert in the end.
