SHORT SHIFT

I am wondering about fitting one of these to my '07 997S.

Normally, I have no issues with the standard change but, if I wind the car up to over 6000rpm, especially in second or third, I have trouble making really smooth changes, getting a jerk as the clutch re-engages.

I'm sure there is no problem with the car, it's just that I'm of an age where I am not as good as I used to think I was. My 25 years old son, with several years track experience and 30 years (or so!) less wear and tear than me, has no problems but he moves a lot faster!!

Would the short shift help or just make it worse? The car's only done 6K miles, will it loosen up any more so the revs don't drop quite so quickly during changes?

I don't mind waiting for the car to warm up, I never go over 2000rpm until the oil is up to temp in any case.



 
The short shifter definitely enhances the driving experience, but it won't cure a second to third shift problem - in fact it may make it worse! [:eek:]
It's normal for 2nd-3rd to be a bit snatchy when cold, but if you're still getting the problem when warmed up, I'd be inclined to get it checked out. It may be an adjustment that can easily be sorted.

I have to agree, the short shift is quite known for making the gear selection more notchy/stiffer when cold... even sometimes when warmed compared to the standard shift.
If its a smooth change through then I don't think it would aid you, however when driving the car "enthusiastically" I'd give it 100% a thumbs up..

There are two options for getting the same result in terms of short shift (In terms of shift throw reduction). The first is to buy an aftermarket kit , plenty on offer , but the ones on e bay sell for about 60 and are identical to those offered by B and M at over 200 ! The kit comprises of a new lever and bushings and fits into the existing selector mechanism once the old bearings have been cut out along with the old lever. This means that going back to original is not possible. The alternative is the OEM porsche short shift , which for the 997/ 987 comprises of a complete new lever assembly , so its possible to fit the original if you sell the car or decide you don't like it. The aftermarket kits are a replica of the porsche supplied item for the earlier 986/996 models , before porsche started to supply a complete new selector assembly. The aftermarket kits fit all 996/986/997/987 models.
 
I have the short shifter factory-fitted to my '08 997 C2S Cab. I found that, on my Millbrook day (with a standard car), the shift initially felt vague, but as the day went on I forgot it was any different. On returning to my car, I found the short shifter felt very short, but a little more 'awkward' than the standard shift. To be honest, if I had another manual, I don't think I'd bother with the SS again.
 
One of the best mods you can do. I did the same thing and can't believe I left it so long.
 
Guess it depends on what type of driver you are. If you DRIVE your car for the pleasure of driving it , a short shift will compliment the experience and give a more sports car feel. If your car is a daily drive , stuck in traffic with the occasional burst of speed on a dual carriageway, then its probably not for you.

The car is a weekend and fair weather toy, not used daily so I will think about it.

I have been trying harder recently and have no doubt that the car is OK, it's just me not quite coordinating correctly (don't move like I used to!!)

Proably best to try and get a test drive in a short shift car..............
 
DSM, the gear change can be a bit notchy on new/low mileage cars but you should mention this to your OPC and they will adjust the shift mechanism if required under warranty, they did this for me. I'd definitely not have an aftermarket short shift kit fitted to a 2007 car, Porsche are dead against any non-Porsche accessories at the moment and by the letter of their new warranty law you'll not be able to renew it when it expires next year!
 
Thanks for that. I'm sure the change is OK, I was just wondering whether or not I might prefer the shorter throw one.

I would only fit the OP one in any case, I understand some of the AM ones need permanent modifications to the mechanism?
