Short shift

I test-drove a 2.7 with a short-shift at Chester OPC a couple of weeks ago. Didn't like it at all tbh, couldn't get the 2nd-3rd change right no matter how I tried. More to the point my wife tried it. She has a Boxster 2.7 which she absolutely loves. She reckoned the short-shift ruined the car[:(] So if you're anywhere near Chester why not go and try it. Yellow 2009 registered Cayman 2.7. <edit> Just noticed you have a Cayman S - totally different gearbox!
 
Hi All

I am thinking of getting a Short shift fitted, I have seen some around on the net for £60.00 ish.

Has anyone had one fitted ?
Does anyone have any recommendations ?
Should I save up and buy Porsche original or is it OK to go for the cheaper ones??

I like the short shift very much. For me having tried it this makes the change so quick and it is a big improvment and a factor in changing my car to one with S/shift. You have to accept that mechanically as you are shortening the throw you are increasing the force so it will be harder to move - hence your wife's comments. It is stiffer when the oil is cold or like mine when new but you get used to it and it goes off after a few miles. My dealer said it was about £500 to retrofit as the labour cost is high to get at the gearbox selector fulcrum. I'm sure the gearbox is no different between the Cayman and Boxster.

As long as you accept that the force to change gear is greater with Short Shift then it also benefits from being a more accurate gear change.
 
Its important that the shift is properly aligned using a set tool before the cables are re attached otherwise there can be mis alignmnet causing a notchy change. I've had one of these on my car for a couple of years and totally love it. The car is kept garaged so i've not noticed any issues with cold weather and I dont drive it when its below zero.
