Short shifter options ?

Well after my discussions with Porscher GB its clear that my 3 year old car i have had for 3 months with OPC warranty needs a new shift gate mechanism due to 'wear and tear'......... does anyone seriously think that a gear shifter is a wear and tear item except Porsche? The 3 nearest dealers to me have never even fitted one!!

Anyway its about £300 fitted to replace and £500 for the Porsche quick shift bits fitted instead but what other things are there out there?

Anyone got one of an idea of price or quality? Is it a good mod?

Drivers who had the habit of one hand on the wheel and one on the gear lever used to be able to wear the bushes prematurely.

Short-shift is not to everyone's taste. Great on a GT3, but I prefer the standard shift on the Boxster.
 
[FONT=Verdana"]I've got a B&M short shift fitted which I gather is pretty much identical to the Porsche unit (actually it may be the other way round as the B&M unit was on the market first). I found the standard change a bit light so I had it fitted. The standard 986 unit is pretty much all plastic, and the B&M all metal so gives you an idea of build quality of the B&M. Oliver is right - you need to try one before making the decision - I love mine but it does make the change quite beefy, to the point that my wife struggles with it. I'm probably the Gorilla from JCB's post so the extra heft suits me ..... [FONT=verdana,geneva"][;)]
 
i have a porsche oem short shift, had it fitted recently.

still feels as notchy as the original shift, but much less throw. personally i wouldn't go back but have kept the bits in case the next owner wants to return it to standard...
 
There is a company on E Bay selling the Band M unit , they are called EMB racing I beleive , based in ireland. The unit they sell is identical the the B and m unit but priced more reasonably at about 45 pounds. The B and M unit was originally suplied to Porsche as their short shift, though the actual housing is different between B and M and Porsche. The short shift kit you buy consits of the lever actuator an a set of pivot bushes , designed to be fitted to the original housing. If your housing is broken then you will need to get a used one from a breakers. I would also suggest getting new couplings that attach the cables to the ball on the end of the actuator. The fit can be done yourself if you are handy with a screwdriver and torx allen key. If you have to buy a new housing , the personally buying the Porsche unit is probably the best way to go. It also comes with a lock bridge to set the gear lever in the corect position before refitting. If you are fitting the gearshift yourself, I would buy the lock bridge tool (about 2 pounds) to ensure you mark the cables correctly before removing the old unit.
 
I have the short shifter on my 07 S. My previous 05 S did not have it. I was unsure at first but now am very happy. Strangely the shift quality has improved after the slave cylinder recall work was done.

I must say that it seems unreasonable in the extreme that you should have to pay for the original equipment to be repaired.

I would echo JCB's comment and ask them to re-consider.
