Short shifter

Hi,

Does anyone rate the fitting of a short shifter. My car has now got 100k on the clock. The gearbox is good and has had the fluid changed but ever since I have found that the transition into second gear is clunky.
Q1. Is the short shifter a positive move?
Q2. Will the short shifter eradicate this issue?
Q3. If recommended is this a job for a DIY enthusiast?
Q4. What are the pitfalls I need to look for?
Q5. Does anyone have comprehensive details/ instructions/pictures that they could share?
Q6. There are no more questions
Many thanks, looks a little demanding I know but hopefully questions overlap.
 
I've only ever had a short shifter on mine (OPC fitted) and have never actually tried a 996 with the standard shifter. It may be heresy, but I'm not a huge fan of it - maybe it's not set up correctly, but I find it quite stiff and regularly miss the 2nd to 3rd transition when changing quickly as there seems to be a 'false' notch I end up in. If you're after a positive shift, then it definitely has that (apart from, for me, the 2nd to 3rd issue). I've seen plenty of DIY pics on other forums, so suspect it's a pretty easy job. ... but maybe the standard is worse as I've no comparison! - and the general consensus across the forums seems to be a short shifter is one of the best mods.
 
I agree with the above sentiments IMO the short shift is a fashion item it does however give you that race driver feel as they say you pays your money...... I had the 996 one and changed it to the 9967 one which was an improvement but was still notchy you couldnt go through the gears quickly with it and when cold third was definately stiff i had anxieties that when it was cold you could roger your synchro's with the force required to push the gearlever home or worse although I have never seen it ,in the states they mention it has caused bent selector shafts which is certainly something you could do without I have now changed to the 997.2 gt3 gear shift and quite frankly it is massive improvement in terms of effort In terms of how it is made i think it is just better engineered but you can find pictures on the internet of the various lever to compare as to it being the go to mod i think people are switching on to the 997.2 gt3 lever

Maybe thats to do with lack of experience driving a manual[:D]

I've had the short shift in my race car (2004 Boxster) swapped back to a standard shift coz I kept making a hash of 2nd to 3rd! To the OP: if you're 2nd to 3rd is already notchy, the short shifter will make it worse. Chris.
 
Thanks gents. I don't mind getting involved in changes which will improve things but it seems as though this mod may not be the improvements I'd be looking for. Think I will stick with what I have. Many thanks all the same. Opinions really appreciated.
