ORIGINAL: gammonnetti I have a short shifter that I am fitting to my 987 but I only have instructions for a 997. I know many of you have fitted these and wondered if anyone has detailed fitting instructions. The main problem being the trim dismanteling. I have found a website that has pics which is helpful but more detailed instructions would install me with a little more confidence.
It is pretty much the same as the 997 the only difference would be if you had a Cayman with the BOSE speaker. If you could be more specific with regards to which piece of trim you are having problems with I will steer you in the right direction. btw Is it the factory replacement you are fitting or and aftermarket kit? (I have previously fitted both types)

On the 997 the instructions I have show you have to remove/lift the gater underwhich you can release the shift knob. On the 987 I understand you have to remove the shift knob cap to somehow release it but I have no instructions on how to do this or any of the remaining dismantling of the trim. This is an after market kit

I know which 987 instructions you have seen or heard of now (Planet Porsche perhaps). The removal (997 version of your instructions) of the gator from the trim is the correct way. If you then turn the gator inside out so you can see the metal shifter you will notice there is a plastic collar where the gator meets the shifter. You need to turn this collar through approx 60 degrees to unlock the gator/knob from the shifter. It is then a case of wiggling and pulling (Be very careful) as I have known both the knob to hit someone in the face and another hit and break the windscreen. Wiggling and patience are a safe must!! This link may help (Instructions cover most 986/996 and 997 Porsche models but for 987 follow 997): [link=http://www.bmracing.com/bmracing/installation_instruction/67.pdf]www.bmracing.com/bmracing/installation_instruction/67.pdf[/link]

Thanks for you help. The written instructions I have are from EMB Racing Ireland, yours are certainly more detailed. The pics I found on the Internet you can see here http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/pages.php?currency=GBP&&pID=69&osCsid=gql1jo3meenkc2aq9b83rvohj7 I guess it's time to bite the bullet hopefully retaining my eyes and windscreen, thanks for the warning.

The Vivid ones are very similar to these: [link=http://www.planetporsche.net/reviews/showproduct.php?product=27&cat=all]http://www.planetporsche.net/reviews/showproduct.php?product=27&cat=all[/link] It is totally unnecessary to disassemble the shifter itself. Good luck.
