Short Test Drive in a 987S

Robert has been badgering me to test one so I did this morning.

Despite my reservations about the interior and the new styling I was well impressed. It had all the trimmings, Atlas Grey with full leather Sand interior, Sports Chrono, Sports Seats 18" Wheels etc. The induction and exhaust notes are intoxicating and I was very suprised at how loud the induction was. Pressing the button for sport mode was pretty amazing and the car was very, very planted.

I have to say that I have more sympathy with what Clarkson wrote after driving this car. Whilst the car behaved impeccably I didn't get the same feedback that I do from my 2.7 with 030. I'll have to go back and have a proper run out in it, and perhaps another after that. Despite the lack of total intimacy I had total confidence in giving it a bit of right foot around the lanes south of Swindon. I've had a silly grin on my face all day despite being told how much a new expansion tank is going to cost!

Another thing that surprised me is that with 280BHP against the 220 of my 2.7 it didn't feel significantly faster although it had much more mid range torque. I rode in Richard Knights 3.6 Boxster last September and that was proper - pressed back in the seat stuff. Having said that I had planned a 2.7 test as well but having been out in the S I didn't bother!

The interior, despite the styling, does give the impression of better build quality and there wasn't a squeak or rattle to be heard. It was dull and cloudy so we didn't get the roof down.

If you haven't done so already get down to your local PC and get in one.

This is a very, very nice motor car and Robert, Brian and Toptas are a very lucky men!

Hi John. Press the pedal all the way down, usually makes a difference [:D][:D] I drove the 2.7 and the S and thought there was a significant difference.

Hi Yoda

I didn't know that you had driven my 2.7! I haven't driven a 987 2.7

It has less dead weight in it such as air con!

All comparisons were based on my car and RK's Roock.

JCB I am so pleased that at lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng last you took a blast in the latest Box and had such a good time despite the fashion in which the 280bhp is unleashed compared to the originals power delivery. Look forward to your 2nd test review in the near future please [8D]

I don't like to rush in to things and don't get me wrong - I think it's a real kick-ass car!

Funny that - when I tested the MY02 "S" when it was just launched (ie glass rear window) it didn't feel any different to my placcy window 2.7 despite some serious right foot. However, a couple of years later (ie January) when I tested the 987 S it felt significantly faster (probably a function of the extra torque and shorter gearing - 6 instead of 5 speed, plus the psychological effect of more noise). Having said that, I may have been just convincing myself as I was using the drive as an excuse to put down the deposit!!

Riding in Richard's Roock is probably what dampened my expectation. His car has 300 plus HP and you don't half know it.

The Caymen should be very interesting!

and like the title states it was a "short" test drive!!!

When I first drove the 987 S I was underwhelmed....I then had a test drive plus in a 987 2.7 as was more impressed.

Now my 987 S has 1500 miles on the clock it still amazes at how rapid it is....oh and then there's the noise!!!![:D]

[&o]What sort of mpg do you get around town. My brand new 100 miler has just returned me a very poor 19.7mpg [] My previous 2 "S's" never dipped below 22mpg
