Should I buy a 3.4 Cayman

Hi, I am desperately after a 05/06 tiptronic Cayman, I haven,t had a Porsche before but am a little bit concerned about bore scoring and general reliability, my present 350z has been superbly reliable and the sensible choice would be to get a 370z, but having driven a 3.4 Cayman tip I have fallen in love. are the reports of bore scoring being blown out of proportion or should it be a major concern. Any advise would be welcomed, thanks in advance, Tony

I'm sure others will confirm but I think the IMS issue only relates to 986 Boxsters and 996. If I could persuade the wife to let me buy a 981 Cayman S I'd sell you mine. [:)] D

Hi Tony I have an 06 Cayman S. I had the same worries as you when I bought mine 3 years ago. In reality car has been totally reliable with no issues at all. Making sure you buy one from a good source and not buy on price is my advice. Complete service history is a must. Good luck Trevor

Absolutely right Tony. And as said, buy on condition and an A1 service history from a reputable source. Also, you're spending a fair amount of money on the car so it's advisable to spend that little bit extra to get a vehicle inspection by a recognised Porsche Indy. Some will be able to perform a borescope inspection if you're concerned about cracked or scored bores. As with the RMS/IMS issues you've probably read about, bore scoring does sometimes happen but a thorough PPI should help allay any of your fears. Good luck with your search. Jeff

As above, I have owned my Cayman S since 2007, bought it with 2,200 miles on the clock and it now has 84,300 not much to report as to incidents I drive it wherever I please throughout the year, using winter tyres when cold enough and changing to summer tyres and 19" wheels in the summer. I will be keeping it after I can no longer carry the Porsche warranty from next year.

Hello Tony. As from the responses from fellow Cayman owners, its a no brainer. However, I did the heart thing first when I bought mine 2 and a half years ago, it was the first one I saw - and drove. Its been like a dream ever since. There is plenty to choose from, but don't over complicate things too much. The only thing I missed was a Porsche sports exhaust. This is now being rectified as I am going down the Carnewal exchange route on Tuesday @ Zentrum Nottingham. Happy choosing ! Kev.

My boyhood dream was to own and drive a 911 - when the time came I drove several and along the way I drove a Cayman S. I ended up buying the Cayman - you will love it!.

Hi Tony, This is my first post on the forum. I was in your position only two months ago! I'd had Subaru's in the past which were absolutely spot on in every regard. I found myself asking the the same questions regarding reliability as you are. I'd spent hours trawling on the web checking out the necessary information to find myself no further advanced. In the end I went to look at a 56 plate 3.4S at 911 Sport in Horncastle. I spent virtually a day there speaking with Phillip and Martin who answered all of my questions openly and honestly. I ended up buying the car there and then and can honestly say it has been a totally fantastic experience thus far. The car is exceptional in every way and I'm sure you won't regret doing it too. As stated by other's I'd make sure that you buy from a reputable source and that the car has a complete and thorough service history. Go for it!!!

Hi this is all fantastic info, thanks very much. It,s good to show my wife as she isn't as enthused as much as me. Cheers, Tony

Hi I have noted your interest in 06 Caymans. Are you still looking ? I have an immaculate manual 2006 3.4S with 15600 miles on the clock I think it is the best condition 2006 Cayman in the country. Owned since new and full history. If you are interested in receiving more details let me know. Ian

Ian, I PM'd you about your car a few days ago regarding a good friend who is actively seeking a car like yours. Did you receive it, I assume not? Ian

YES. No real need to say any more than that. Get the S, not much difference price and its a great car. Buy you like you buy any car, with care, checking history, sussing out owner etc. Don't worry too much about horror stories but read up and take precautions. Planet 9 is a great site aswell, but remember the problems are not representative of the owners community.

A reply would have been nice, a simple 'no thanks' would have done. Anyway, he's bought a nice 3.4S this week so hard luck

Hi Tony , Just wondering if you bought a Cayman yet ? I was also recently in your positon , had been hankering after a 911 since I was 17 ( thats some time go now ! ) and went to OPC Nottingham , they had a Targa 4 911 and a 3.4S Cayman > After driving both bought the Cayman , its awesome , and still have to pinch myself that the black beauty in the garage is mine ! I hope yu have got one and are enjoying driving it , they are phenomenal cars best wishes Richard

YES, you should I was just like you, I spent 3 months on and off touring the country looking I eventually bought a 55 plate Cayman s, with full service history, 45000 miles. Also came with 4 brand new uniroyals. I could not be happier. I would say do your research. I had my worries a bit like you but after reading so much and looking at that many cars I found what I was after Good luck - treat yourself Cheers steve
