Should I buy a 987 RS60 Spyder or not? Please let me have your thoughts and experience

Hi everyone, I currently have a 2005 Boxster S which I have had for 3.5 years now and am considering swapping it for an RS60 Spyder but I wanted to consult the forum to get any advice or simply thoughts on whether this would be a good move or not.

I am aware there is a hot debate between RS60 owners and standard 987 Gen 2 owners as to which car is better value for money as prices are similar but I winder if the exclusivity of the Spyder is enough to command the premium on price.

Final question, as the RS60 is a limited edition end of run model is it likely to become a collectors item and therefor be an appreciating asset?

Look forward to reading your thoughts.

Many thanks
Paul (R2)

I switched from a 987S to an RS60 a few years back and it certainly felt like an upgrade: the RS60 just feels and looks special. It also attracted more admiring gazes and positive comments than either of the other Boxster’s I’ve owned.

You will probably pay a premium but it is likely to retain its value more than a standard car. That said, I’m not convinced it will ever become highly collectible or appreciate in value dramatically.

In summary, I loved mine!

Hi Jhemus, thank you for your reply which basically confirms my own thoughts that it looks and probably would feel like an upgrade due to all the red leather and the red hood and I can imagine it would attract more admiring glances.

I was a bit sceptical that it would ever become collectible but if it retains a better residual than a standard S then that’s a bonus.

interestingly I believe my 987S has actually appreciated since I bought it, although I have tidied it up mechanically.

thanks again.

Paul

Great car limited edition lots more extras as standard.

Don't forget running cost such as road tax for the RS 60 man box £585 Tip £600 per year.

Hi Jhemus,

I forgot to ask, did you sell yours recently, and why did you get rid of it?

Good point Cliff, I had forgotten they have a higher road tax than the 3.2, but hopefully worth it!

I have had my RS60 for 4years and love it. Agree with the previous comments it’s a good upgrade with an element of rarity. There is a slight appreciation since I bought mine. Road tax is costly but otherwise no more expensive . Dont see many at club meets . Good Luck.

I sold mine three years ago simply because I had a 981 GTS itch to scratch. It really was a lovely car. It only cost £2k more than the 987S I sold and I made £50 when I sold it four years later!

It’s a no from me, its just a very nice 987.1S and nothing more special than the regular car. It was purely built to use up 987.1 parts to make way for 987.2

Too many Porsche cars have been labelled special in recent years with a unwarranted premium attached.

In the Boxster. camp there are only 3 cars worthy of calling a true special and they are 987,718 and 981 Spyder in that order!

Its quite simple really, buy what you like[:)]

Cliffs point below is quite valid. However, since most of these cars are only likely to be on the road for six months of the year you could look at half the road tax fees.

ok, it's a stock car with an iffy engine at a daft price.

No value in the car imo over a normal one, better off with a 987.2 car.

just my opinion, but you asked for more detail.

Exactly John people buy what they want and can afford everyone has different budgets

Why I pointed out the higher road tax bracket on the Rs 60 maybe not enough to stop someone buying one but to be in full facts.

I disagree with Spyderwhites comments yes Boxster Spyders are great Boxsters but there are other Boxsters worth owning I am sure many owners of other Boxster models would agree.

There's a model for everyones budget in the Boxster range that's the beauty, the game has certainly progressed with the latest 4.0 litre Models .

I am sure which ever model people own they enjoy it. The Boxster Register caters for every model made.

Enjoy your cars no matter what model you own.[;)]

Hi everyone, I’ve finally decided and bought a 987.2, and so glad I did. The engine feel much more modern and refined and no smoke bombs on startup. I love the led side lights and tail lights but the halogen headlights are not a patch on my Gen 1 Litronic lights so they will need changing pretty soon for led bulbs, I can’t stand the yellow look.

the centre console and the PCM3 is also great, as are the heated sport seats and the Bose speakers, although the sports chrono is a complete waste of time in my opinion as I won’t be tracking this car. Haven’t really had much experience with the sport button yet.

I’m glad I made this move but wish it had PSE as its very quiet.

looking forward to making good use of it in the summer.
