Should I Buy one?

Hi all. Have been looking at 911 996's for a while and haven't found the one for me yet and at a dealers yesterday looked at one which was side by side with a Cayman. Wife of course says "I like the look of that one more (Cayman)".
I hadn't considered a Cayman but am now thinking.........
Could you Cayman owners give some comments.
They have same 3.4 engine? IMS/RMS Issues?
The interior looked a bit more modern?
Mid-engine so better handling?
Car tax on a 3.4 £515 pa?
Anything else?
Would appreciate any comments.

IMS/RMS Issues? - yes, unless it's a 987.2 (facelift version from 2009-2012, not as many about) The interior looked a bit more modern? - a 987 Cayman has a very similar interior to a 997 series 911, slightly more modern than a 996 911/986 Boxster Mid-engine so better handling? - better is debatable as you win some/lose some, it's more neutral for sure Car tax on a 3.4 £515 pa? - depends on the model and year, see here: http://www.parkers.co.uk/...an/coupe-2005/car-tax/

 
Most of the points are spot on

but car tax isn't 515 pa on a 987 Cayman

mine was about half that

and if you can stretch to a good gen 2 with dfi engines you won't get rms issues but also slightly better fuel economy

 
I bought a low mileage 2001 996 C2 manual coupe for a very good price in 2010.

Never owned or even driven high performance cars, but always fancied a Porsche.

The scale of the difference between that car and what I had driven before scared me to death & my wife wasn't keen on it.

We found ourselves in an OPC (for the first time ever) one wet Saturday afternoon shortly afterwards and found a 2006 manual Cayman S with only 12K miles.

Test drove it and it inspired so much confidence - traded in the 996 and bought the Cayman.

The reputation as the best handling car is well deserved.

We both love it.

Now I am a bit more acclimatised, I wish hadn't traded in the 996 though.

mostly they are less than £300

a few were £500 and a very limited number were £515

but there's no shortage of those at less than £300 - including mine !!

 
Should you buy one? Go drive one and see if you like it! Asking that question on here is like asking should you buy white or red wine? It's about your taste - not ours! (seeing as you asked, though, if the choice is a Cayman or 996, then get the Cayman![:)])

 
I always thought that by the time the Cayman was introduced the known IMS issue had been partially addressed?

 
The IMS as fitted in the Cayman 987.1 was the last iteration of the design as used in earlier engines and problems with it were very overstated thanks to the internet, one case gets multiplied! But even the engine of the early Cayman S was not the same engine as the 996, it also had a later design of RMS. Bore scoring, which according to the internet was a fault on every engine was generally caused by people loading the engine from low revs, as the bore oil jets only open above 1.8bar and at tickover when hot they may well be closed, it takes a short time above tickover and preferably above 2,000rpm to ensure the pressure is getting the oil where it is needed, on some engines it has been found to have hot spots on the cylinders but again if running the engine too slow the water pump is running at low flow and so the rear cylinders are being "cooled" by very hot water so keep the revs up!

As others have said drive some, the 987.2 is quite different and my favourite drive although I loved driving my 987.1 for eight years and almost 90,000 reliable miles, whether the PDK is better in the 981 is than the 987.2 is just in the electronics and unfortunately can't be upgraded but if you have chrono then that changes the gear change response as well as the throttle, it just doesn't blip on the downshifts but it does rev match which doesn't sound so good but it works.

 
I would encourage everybody to go Gen2 rather than Gen1.

Gen 1 --- particularly the 3.4 are a bore scoring problem waiting to happen --- and PDK only arrived for Gen 2 ---

It's enticing to look at Gen1 prices and say it won't happen to me ... but it does and it can. So if you are tempted, why not price in an annual warranty to cover this ?
