Should I change the colour of my car

Hi fellow 993 owners

I have had my 1995 N (Dec) 993 C4 Cab for 6 years covering miles from 67,000 to 99,000 as my daily driver. Spent close to 10,000 sorting out mechanically by Jazz (new clutch, gearbox rebuild, etc etc), however to be honest I have let the outside slide so it really needs a respray and new hood. Following a broken leg I know find the manual somewhat hard to drive, so using it really as a weekend car, and was thinking of trading it in however only offered £12,000 against a used 997, so thought I might as well keep it and get a better daily driver auto merc ML CDI :)

Got some quotes and thinking off going to Southbound for new roof and leather retrim, and Sandydown for the respray and sort out bit of rust and new checkstraps. I recon the total for this work would be around £8000 and then I would have a mint 993 cab again, which I will hopefully fall back in love with !?!!

However if spending so much I was wondering if I should change the colour? Currently midnight blue on outside with blue room, and light grey interior. Thinking of changing the interior to a light tan colour and possibly keeping out side blue.

So my questions:
1) Anyone got any thoughts on the best colour combination inside and out on a 993 cab? Please post photos if you have one.

2) Is £8000 a realistic price (inc vat) for the above work, and recommendations on above companies

I would guestimate around £5000 or so for the door checks, rust removal (rear/front arches and windscreen surround?) and a full respray. Much more if you are going to change the colour as that involves repainting underside of the bonnet and engine covers, inside door, engine and boot aperatures, etc.

Regardless of what colour you go for, a colour change is going to reduce the car's value, not least because you'll lose the option sticker to the underside of the bonnet and people will assume it's been in a front end smash [8|].

Changing the interior colour is also a massive job because of all the associated trim that will require to be swapped over too. You should manage to find a completed interior at a breakers with the condition, spec (e.g. fully electric/heated seats?) and rarity of your colour choice dictating the price.

I would get the bodywork sorted in the same colour and I can virtually guarantee that you'll fall back in love with it as soon as you see it, even with a light grey interior [:D].

 
12 grand as a trade in is frankly an insult. if your thinking of changing colour Red is the new Black for sure. Also seemingly everybody in the 90"S ordered 993"s in silver, blue or black so if u change go for something very different to the era. my little 993 c4 in red causes quite a stir!!!
 
Thanks for the advice guys. If I do the work will probably never sell it.... :)

The interior of car is black (carpet and dash); with grey leather on seats and grey ?plastic side panels on doors. Thus would only need to change the door panels and retrim seats in say light biege? so wouldnt actually need to buy new seats and carpet? This would cost about £2000 I think.

Yeah I was surprised by the money I was offered on trade in, however I guess in times of recession the dealers try and screw you even more!

It drives beautifully though....the change in engine note when you get above 6000rpm with roof down is bliss....

But when the roof is up i looks a bit shabby.

Clyde may Also have a point that if u change the colour it may make people suspicious if u sell it. People are untrusting enough even if u just had some light paintwork done
 
Wouldn't recommend a colour change. There's a stigma about it that reduces values. Midnight blue is a desirable colour on 993s and originality is generally regarded as best.
 
... but then again, it's your car & you're 'restoring' it for yourself, not the next owner [;)] Have a look at the speedster thread on 911uk forum, that was a midnight blue cab that is now a fantastic different shade of blue.

Yes, but that 993 speedster shell was completely stripped back to the bare metal and built up again from scratch, layer by layer.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to sell yours privately and buy a 993 in a different colour ?
 
Its an awful lot of money to spend that you'll never see again sanjay

Id say original is best colour wise

12k is a bloody derisory offer mind you, take your business elsewhere mate![;)]
