Should i go for a Boxter???

Hello all,

I have just joined this site as i am interested in buying my first porsche, and am thinking of going for a 2000-2002 ish boxter. The thing is my budget is around £8000, maybe £9000 at a push. This would be the third car and only used in the summer for a bit of fun.

My question is with this small budget could i get hold of a decent one, or would i just be buying trouble? If i do go ahead, what should i be looking for in a Boxter of this age? any common issues etc?

I am anticipating only doung around 3000 miles per year, what sort of running costs am i likley to encounter doing this milage?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated, as i try to get a better idea of if this is worth it or not.

Thanks in advance.

Personally, I wouldn't doubt the choice.
I have "only" had mine (a 2000 3.2S) since May last year - best car I've had - wish I'd bought it instead of my MX5 seven years previosuly.
Surprisingly, running costs are not that bad - especially if you find a good independent for servicing. At 3000 miles per annum, you'll get away with an annual service/check - around £4-500 ish.
MPG is also surprising - with mine, I get around 30 on the motorway, with an overall average of 24-25 - this of course depends on your driving - sub 10mpg is possible with a HUGE smile on your face.
For your budget, there are some good cars about, but possibly not the year you've stated.

There are some reasonable guides through PCGB, which will point out some of the pitfalls.

Good hunting

Definitely find a good independent garage near you. There's no real point in maintaining an OPC service record on a car that old. 3000 miles is pretty low but a 2000 car will need an annual oil change anyway, which will help. If you don't have one already, buy a battery conditioner otherwise your battery will die from the extended periods of non-use.

Should I go for a Boxster.. YES... Oh Yes and a Boxster S if you can find one

Thanks for the advice everyone, i think i have pretty much made up my mind on the Boxter. Was also looking at the Honda S2000, but its not a Porsche [:)]

Had a quick look through the forum, but cant seem to find anything around what to look for when buying a used Porsche. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Should i be looking to buy private or via a dealer?

Thanks

I specifically wanted some extras - heated seats, cruise control, cd multi change, etc. all of which add to the price making mine close to £13k - but that was last May and prices have come down. Had I bought now, I would probably have saved £2-3K
Pertsonally, I'd go fpr a good S - if you get a good history, you should be OK

Also try this link - it is for 987's but ................

A dealers second hand car is only someone else's second hand car[:-] Any questions you have about the car a dealer he is unlikely to know.
Buying private is the way forward - look the previous owner in the eye and ask some thought provoking questions - then if you like the car and can negiate a price get a PPI done - a PPI is not a nice to have but an essential!

Two things you have on your side:-

- One - Time
- Two - Money

Enjoy your buying experience its the first part of ownership[;)]
