Should i have my air con serviced

JUst had a minor service on my 996 + MOT. All passed, no warranty issues but they have suggested that i have my air con serviced. It has been working perfectly ok? I am sure they said around £200 ? What do you think ? Could an Indi do this cheaper with the same assurance as an OPC i.e warranty will remain intact etc ?

Any advice would be welcome

Steve

Hi,

An Indi or an air con specialist can do it cheaper. Expect to pay about 80 quid for a recharge.

Air con service is £35 at kwik fit they all use the same machine even Porsche it removes gas and oil then replaces to the correct charge and should be done annually but most certainly at regular intervals. to recharge and freshen then usually an aircon specialist is the favourite but it doesn't cost that much so unless you have odour a recharge is all you need

where are you steve my local indi can do it for you but am in Yorks

I would suggest that if the system is working and providing cold air that you should save your money. I got ripped off by my OPC for an air condition service on my then 2 year old car - the service advisor strongly advised that it was necessary and like a mug I got it done with the regular service. I had not noted any problems before and certainly did not notice any improvement after. I am afraid that due to various work pressures I did not get round to querying it with the OPC. Having had several air conditioned Porsches I have never had the air condition units serviced before and unless there are problems will not get them serviced in the future.

A good test is to see how efficiently the sytem works on demisting the car on a rainy day etc.

Why should it be done regularly? If you get odour, then work is needed, but that's not to do with recharging.

How often do you have your fridge regassed?

£200? Sounds like the discs and pads rip off that they normally try on. If your aircon is working I'd save your money. I believe there is a problem with odour that can happen, but that seems to happen with people who do not use their aircon for a prolonged period. Which I can't understand given that it is hot in the summer and the windows need demisting asap in the winter.

Thats what i thought

To be honest i suspect they have serviced anyway by mistake as the system does now sem to be pushing out lots of really cold air now (More than before and it was still ok), so maybe they realised and thought they would try and get some more money out of me.

It might be worth doing a little 'servicing' of your own, i.e using a long vacuum attachement to get into the corners of the aircon condensers and rmoving all the old leaves and other detrieus that absorbs water and causes corrsion.

Possibly as a result of changing the pollen filter, which is part of the minor service.

Good point Richard. I hadn't thought of that

Anyway I need new rear tyres and i fancy having my wheels refurbed, so its probably going to be a trip to Zentrum, so i'll ask Mike to look at the air con at the same time.

Not sure what they did at the service but it sounds much nicer now and the handling feels more precise so i'm happy with what the OPC have done which is the main thing i guess :)
