Should I NCT the Porker...?

In a bit of a moral dilemma here. We have NCT centres throughout this country for testing cars. Standards vary... Its a private concern and we are all told "you need the NCT" Well Ive driven different vehicles over the years and Ive never been stopped for "no NCT".... No one that I have heard of has been charged with "no NCT" and no penalty is listed for "no NCT". A Garda once told me if its taxed, insured, and has good rubber then he personally wouldnt bother with the NCT....! I know for a fact that the insurance company still cover you with "no NCT" but if you are comprehensively covered then they will not give you the full market value of the car if you make a claim. No surprise there then.. Thats fair enough cause I'm covered on the trade policy....! You can tax the vehicle without the NCT test as well.... !

This will be the first NCT test on the 944 therefore when it passes I will only get 2 months before I have to test it again. The NCT Centre is a circus where the clowns are in charge. They failed our "Faye" recently for having "no handbrake" when the tester was shown where it was he was astounded.....[:mad:] The testers are all failed mechanics and dont have a clue.. At least the MOT system is run by approved garages and are able to address issues if they find them.

Should I
A. Get the 944 tested bearing in mind the incompetence of the system and the testers exposing me to a lot of heartache.

B. Dont worry about it - I only use the car occasionally and I am definately insured and I can tax the 944 even without the test .

You don't need the stress involved with dealing with a bunch of muppets over your P & J!![:)]

Why not just get a specialist inspection (healthcheck etc) that you could keep with the car instead?

I would check your insurance very carefully as, I would assume, they will require some proof that the vehicle is road worthy. While you may not have to provide that certificate on application for insurance it may well be a stipulation of cover.

Thats true John. It seems to be like a test you put your car through if you want to sell it. Our trade insurance policy covers us no matter what we are driving regardless of condition. This NCT thing seems to have been brought in haphazardly by the government here. When it was brought in first you needed it to get tax but the whole system broke down very quickly and the government had to renege to allow people to tax their cars. I have never heard of a Garda prosecution for "No NCT". The Insurance companies will still cover your car without NCT but you will lose out if you are fully comp and claim. The NCT cert lasts 2 years. It is dated from the cars first registration date. Lets say you let the NCT slide for a year after its expiry. When you get the car tested you only get one year.

This country is a total disgrace as far as cars are concerned. I have no issue with getting the car tested but I have issue with them imbeciles in the NCT centre. England has a far superior system. No Mot = no tax. You get a years ticket from the date the car is tested - no matter its off the road for 30 years. The tax on my and every other Irish reg 944 is at least €900 per year. Its €1500 for an S2....[:mad:] This country is a joke [:'(] They do everything in their power to ruin things for car enthusiasts....[:(]

If insurance is optional I should move over there I could save loadsa money from that and have more than one Porsche too without the hassle of being able to only insure one.

Incidentally I also saw your old number plate 9EX on a Silver CLK cabrio earlier
 
The silver CLK is probably Bob who actually owned the plate.

I have insurance for all my cars (it's actually more necessary in my view when a large number of other road users legally don't have it), but the benefit is because you don't have to buy it the barrel that you are bent over by the insurers is removed and they have to quote you a price that not only competes with other insurers but also with the possibility that you'll just not bother at all.

There was talk a while back of making third party compulsory, I think because something like 20% of cars here are uninsured. It had me screaming at the radio when they cited the UK an example of where it's compulsory as I believe 20% of cars there are uninsured also. If they do make it compulsory then hopefully they will add a flat-rate levy to the "registration" (road tax), which would probably make comprehensive still cheaper as even fewer people would bother and you'd only be paying to cover your own car.

They do a similar thing here already with ACC which is (I believe) a government agency that places a levy tax on all insurance and also on employers. That money goes into a scheme which covers everyone against accidental injury incurred anywhere and doing anything. The net result is that the "ambulance chasers" and "no-win no-fee" bottom-feeder lawyers don't exist. A downside is that apparently you can get treated better in the same hospital if you had an accident than if you naturally got ill, but I guess nothing is perfect.
 

Hi Donal , I am reading this post but struggling to fully understand what this ( NCT ) is ? Would this be the equivalent of the UK M.O.T ? Or is this just some sort of additional test you can get ? Do you pay road tax at 900 Euros per year ? Do you have to have an M.O.T done every year to make sure the vehicle is road worthy ? And last of all do you pay a lot less for fuel there to compensate for the high road taxes ? Basically how much does it cost you each year with insurance and Tax and M.O.T if you have one there , to run your S2 Pal ? Sorry for all the question but we complain here in the UK but seems like we are getting a cracking deal . I do 6 months road tax about £120 the M.O.T £40 and insurance £250 , this would be the basic costs to run my 944T , best regards J
