Should I or shouldn't I..........?

My 2005 C2S with 30k miles will soon have gone out of the 2 year extended warranty I bought when I purchased the car from an OPC. It has a full OPC history so far and has been brilliant.

Ive had no problems at all and when it got jacked up recently for a look at the brake discs at my local Indy he commented that "she's a dry one!" which I took to mean there's not a lot of oil leaking.

So, it's decision time, 3 years further down the line than you chaps with your newer cars coming out of manufacturers warranty.

My nearest OPC is about 70 miles away and they have been fine so far. 5 miles away is a good Indy. Not that I've had any major doings with them so far but they are recommended by 911 Virgin.

I do want a warranty, of that there is no question and as I want to continue my ownership I'd like to carry it on for a couple of years. The OPC warranty including the inspection but excluding Porsche Assistance will cost £2300 and with Waranty direct it will be £1810 including their inspection.

I don't want to get into the Warranty Direct vs Porsche Warranty issue as, having been a customer of WD in the past, their customer service and cover are good enough for me to use them. But their price point is a little too close to Porsche to be entirely convincing, hence my dilemma.

My decision is to stay within the OPC fold or to leave it - fully or partially.

If I leave will that have a significant effect on my car's value if I continue to have any work done in a timely fashion by my local Indy?

I'd quite like to do some minor bolt on mods, mainly interior and PCM stuff which Porsche just don't offer or, indeed, allow and thus I like the idea of a little independence. In addition brakes, exhausts and other consumables will be better value.

It's tough, I realise the final decision is up to me but over all I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Hope this helps but as someone who bought a 05 C2S ... did the fact that it had left the OPC stable affect either my buying decision or the price?

For me the emphatic answer was no and no. My experience (albeit of mainstream cars) said that main dealerships charge more (for servicing etc etc) and care less (for everything except selling you a new car). So once a car gets to three or four years old, you should be expecting a sensible owner to be presenting you with a full service history but be happy that it has been well looked after.

Now for early 997s with a 2 year 20k service, I think you might expect the first two through the OPC system but beyond that, I'm not sure. My car had exactly that - two OPC services and the third (60k) done by a well known indy. My local indy is excellent and I think it does make a difference that it is 10 miles from me and not the 30 miles to the nearest OPC.

Certainly the previous owner of my car went through the same agony (extend the warranty etc ) and essentially decided not to stick with the OPC network because they would insist on using the recommended parts etc, because they wouldn't allow the Road Angel that was fitted and because servicing costs are higher.

Who is the local indy? They probably offer a warranty which may be the best option for you....as a non owner looking for a C2S the OPC warranty is a nice to have but ussually comes with the higher price and hence isnt swaying my decisions.
