Should I sell my 2015 981 and order the 4 ltr GTS

Hi Cliff thanks for the swift reply - I have the 981 now, but was asking about the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and how that sounds in comparison.

I am sure someone that has had both will be along soon but I know which I prefer from hearing both but don't want to open up a can of worms. [:)]

As been said above if you want a tad more power go for the 4.0 but we have decided to stick with Traceys 981 GTS plenty for today's roads.

Plus I expect it to cost a fair bit to change for small gains but each to there own of course.

Enjoy.[:D]

HI all. I’ve had my black edition 981 since 2016 and I love it. But I’m sorely tempted by the 718 4 ltr Boxster GTS. My question concerns the sound of the car. Mine has the switchable exhaust and sounds wonderful. What do people think of the sound of the GTS. Does it sound as good? Would love to get a range of opinions

The GTS4.0 sounds pretty good once over 3,800 rpm and just gets better the higher the revs rise. Below 3,800 it is pretty muted because even with PSE engaged the exhaust valves are closed. You can sort this with a Cargraphic exhaust valve controller which keep valves open at all revs. (its switchable by a little remote so that you can have it in factory mode if you like).

The sound is a great sound, but its not as loud as a 981, nor does it have pops and bangs ( for me that is a good thing, I love a good howl but pops and bangs are just......)

However the engine is an epic engine. Lots of power but huge torque too, very responsive, and tractable too.

The chassis of the 718 has moved on quite a bit from the 981, especially the steering, and in GTS form it is stunningly good. Costs a lot to change but overall the gains are fairly significant.

Sadly you will have to buy used at a premium unless you are happy to wait 2 to 3 years for a Boxster.

Thanks Wollemi. That’s really helpful info. I’m thinking of ordering new and understand the current delivery is Q4 2023. May keep the 981 - not sure my husband wants to part with it yet!

Comparing the 981GTS and the 718GTS side by side at Simply Porsche, IMHO the 981 is by far the nicer styled car, the 718 just being a bit too angular.

I also dont like what they have done with the dash air vents.

It may be a better driving car but as the 981 is awesome anyway, I would go for a late model 981GTS and save a load of £££.

The 981 sounds better also😜😜

Could the 4.0 GTS exhaust note be sorted by and new back box? The rest of the car seems to be a step up. I currently own a 981 s and the 4.0 GTS feels like the next step.

Stuart,

There are a number of suppliers of aftermarket catback systems for the 718 GTS and GT4. In the UK Litchfield have developed one and a chap on the Cayman forum has described one fabricated by Ninemeister for his 718 GT4.

Other companies who can supply a system are JCR, Fabspeed and Akrapovic, although I’m sure that there are others.

None will be cheap! 😲

Indeed. I’m surprised it’s not as nice sounding as the 981 but I assume thats the regulations that kicked in that muffled that sound out the factory.

I’m afraid so Stuart. It’s all down to the introduction of Gasoline/Otto Particulate Filters on the latest cars.

Purely based on sound my 2.9 987.2 ( basically the same engine as the 2.7 in the 981 less DFI ) with PSE sounds a lot better than my 718 Spyder.

I strongly considered the same route as you, but with long delivery times and local OPCs unable to find me a demo I have stayed where I am with my 981.

In truth I don't feel I need a faster car. For me the 981s is plenty quick enough for the UK roads. I have never wished that I had more power/ grip/ stiffer suspension (standard with 19s is nicely compliant for UK roads). I am now in my 60s and having given up fast bikes, the Boxster has been a great (and sociable) replacement. Assuming money is no object go for it, but my thought process was for the same money I could keep my Boxster and get a nice Ducati, OPC servicing and warranty...(hang on, did I say I just had even them up ?!)

If you are doing track days I can see the point of going GTS...but then if that was the case I'd get a Cayman.

I find the standard exhaust is plenty loud enough, and when I hear pops and bangs I think there is a car with a problem...

Bear in mind you will also get increased duty etc with the 4.0, and I am not sure you will get the 38 mpg I have been getting in France in our latest road trip....
