Should I Sell My 996?

Reluctantly thinking of selling my 3.6 'facelift' 996 if anyone is interested.

My friendly OPC keep trying to persuade me to order a 997, but I'm having difficulty getting enthusiastic about it.

I bought my first 911 in 1983 and I've upgraded every 2 or 3 years, via 3.2s, 964s, 993s, 996s (even held onto a couple of 'classics').

But, the 997 seems to be the next logical step. Great car. Although, so is my current 996 [:)]- and probably the nicest car I've ever owned. And that's before one takes into account the c.£35k cost to change[&:].

So, if someone wants a mint, hi-spec, low mileage 996 at a bargain price, then have a look under the for sale section, before I change my mind.

Obviously it is up to you, and we all have our own reasons.
The OPC's need to keep shifting metal, so will encourage you to change, so are not the best judge of what is necessary. I am not convinced the current sales levels are sustainable which is why they are starting to try harder to sell the new cars. (I also noticed the older car stock seems lower than it used to be.)
If you are happy with your car keep it. Don't sell something you like, or you will regret it.
Additionally, the current prices are depressed, so you will be crytallizing the loss (I believe it is called). If you keep the car for another 2 years before selling, you will probably not lose much more, so I would think about it.
If you are lacking enthusiasm for the 997, then what is the point?

I agree with Stuart - you obviously are quite fond of your current car, and perhaps it's just a question of 'the itch' (which we all get from time to time) for a change.

I would compile a list of things that you appreciate/don't appreciate about your current car and I would wager the 'like' list will be much longer than the 'don't like'.

It sounds a fabulous car - the 997 is a nice car (I have an S) - but don't be hasty - this time of year is a bad time to sell, think it over until the Spring, when values are better and cars are selling.

Remember that many folk would give their eye teeth to be in your shoes with such a lovely machine in your garage!![;)]

Its awaste of money (wait until the are some low milage 2nd hand 997 for sale)

We cancelled our despoit on a 997 cab.

we were offered for our car -
996 c4 cab August 02 car £36k in part ex.

 
I bet the sound track on a home cinema isn't as good as the PSE on a 996[;)].

The price is a small margin over the figure my OPC have suggested if they buy it back[&:].
 
That's exactly whay I just did.
My last payment on my 996 went in December. So now it's all mine.
I love the car and have no desire to sell it so I bought myself a huge 42" Plasma TV and
cinema surround system instead.

If you have a 996 you will get all the fun you need that you couldn't get any better in a 997.
A 911 is a 911 and unless you track it to the max you can never extract the real awsome capabilities from it. It's very likely you have never driven your 996 to the full yet.
Just enjoy it. You own a dream car already.
 
My latest 996 realy is faultless and if you can the ignore the temptation to change then don't. I agree with the responses so far and for me I really don't get value out of my car so to change to a new 997 really wouldn't make sense but if money was plentiful......
 
Thanks for all the advice - very useful, very sensible.

I don't like to change just for the sake of it, and I do have other cars that are 'keepers', but I thought I would test the water.

I've had quite a few enquiries, but everytime I send someone the details and photos I think, this is silly - keep it and enjoy it and save a lot of money. (Danofesher - already have a home cinema, but kids now want a tennis court[&:])


 
Oliver you may recall sending me some photos mid-05...your car looked stunning then. I was in the market for my first 996...and subsequently bought one in July (my04 basalt/black/high spec). The day I picked it up I had already decided to keep it for 18/24 months and return for a 997....having had the car for some months I have changed my mind. I use it most days and to say its suberb would be an understatement. The 997 may have some improvements but I couldn't justify the extra spend because my present car gives me everything I am looking for and alot more.....keep it and enjoy!
 
I've gone the LHD route (I have other things to do with my money than put it all into cars) and am very pleased with my 09/2003 996C2 Tip.

At the time (08/05) I looked at how much extra it would be to get a one year old LHD 997. £10,000 more than the £37,500 I spent.

I did not see how the 997 could be worth £10,000 more.

You are talking of a lot more than that, and so in my opinion, there is nothing more to say.

(Apart from) as Scouser says, you have a dream car now anyway.
 
I have pre-facelift 996 Cab. I can't imagine getting anything more out of a 997 Cab other than a bill for about £30k, which I can find better uses for. My 996 is the best car I've owned and I intend to keep it for a considerable time.

If anyone's interested, 2001X 996 C4 Cab for sale. Totally pampered. Excellent condition, around 100000 miles. Offers around £25k. Email me in ten years and 60000 miles...... [:D]

What about a 996TT instead of a 997?
Simply fantasic value at the moment!

I really like the 996 TT, and the thought has crossed my mind. Certainly, it's something many prospective 997 buyers should consider.

But, my taste in 911s is pretty specific (Eoin Sloan calls it 'catholic'). For me a 911 needs to be - Coupe, Manual, Normally Aspirated, RWD and the lighter the better. But for road cars I like a few toys and comforts. If I did sell my 996, I would be quite happy with a standard 997, with a few options and perhaps PCCBs. Less is more.
