Ok maybe Im being daft and this has been posted 100 times before, but.... When is the new 997 actually in the showrooms? The original leaked document said 5th July which is of course this weekend.

Ive just called the local dealer to ask if they will have any new cars (and PDK) in the showroom but all the salesmen were busy and the receptionist didnt have a clue what I was on about...

Anybody know for sure when they are due in the UK showrooms?

Ha, why doesnt that surprise me... The receptionist didnt even know that they already had the product! I bet there is probably a 997.2 on display about 10' from her desk!

So it seems I have my saturday morning sorted then. The mrs has a hair appointment which means Im out to play!

I have a test drive at Hatfield on Saturday at 9.00am. Cant wait. Also will be going for driving experience at Silevrstone on 17 July.

Grrrrrrr, my dealer finally called me back at about 6pm on Friday to say they didnt have any FL cars in and were expecting the first ones to arrive in about 2 weeks. They seemed unable to explain why other dealers already had them when they are always keen to explain that they are one of the biggest OPC's in the country!

Hmmmmmm..... No show for me on Saturday as a result.

My OPC sent out a news update brochure stating:

  • Carrera and Carrera S: In showrooms and on sale 5th July
  • Carrera 4 and Carrera 4s: In showrooms and on sale 25 October

My dealership has 3 cars: A Carrera 2S cab and a Coupe of each.

I test drove the Cab today. Here are my brief initial impressions:

1. The dealership did not display any new colours on their cars, no Carerra 2 wheel, nor have colour charts (not thier fault, they get what they are given)
2. No comprehensive brochure or price list was available. Typical!
3. The C2S sounds like an old C2S with sports exhaust. Excellent.
4. I did not like the steering wheel PDK buttons and once pressed the button in error. I will change gear using the gear lever.
5 The gear changes were seemless. I went from 7th - 4th with total smoothness.
6. Not convinced the new Sat Nav system is an improvement. We will see when I get to grips with it.
7. Obviously was not able to explore the performance envelope as the car was brand new.
8. Did not like the vent seats (chilly draught up my back), but suppose they might be great on a very hot day.
9. Car looked just like the old version.

Pick a colour! Chatting to one of the drivers at Silverstone, this is the fleet of FL cars that will be used for the test days coming up. Had a quick sit in & the ergonomics of the new steering wheel felt much better than I thought. Looking forward to the 14th for a proper test

Derek, this is a worry, I thought you were a hugh fan of the new technology?

How is the dealership - to be honest I am a bit miffed that I did not get an invite down to see the car that I put a deposit down for in Jan and subsequently went on to spec one of the first cars to £80K!!! I guess they have my money.

I have a mate who also bought from another dealer in the same group and got pre-invited to see the cars 'out back' for being one of their first 997.2 customers.

Anyway are you going to order one - go for it I say! You do need PDK, SC Plus and SPASM with -20mm and LSD though!!

Good luck.

Yup, I do like technology and am a great fan of PDK. Just don't like the ergonomics of the steering wheel buttons. No big deal, but would have prefered something like that on the Audi TT.

Had a look at the manual coupe and cab S pdk at Guildford OPC today - will be interested to try the pdk as the steering wheel buttons look similar to the system on the Cayenne, which is not particularly intuitive and rarely gets used by me as a manual. Roll on Silverstone next week.

Ok having spoken to the dealership last Friday night and being told that they were not getting a FL car in for at least two weeks, I finished the conversation agreeing that they would call me as soon as they got one to arrange a test drive. I have already been in about 3 months ago enquiring about them to a salesman so their records should now show me as "double" interested not to mention Im an existing owner having bought new only 14mths ago.

So... A colleague with a Caymen says to me, "oohh, I saw the new 997FL in the showroom yesterday - very nice, I think you will like it"....

WTF!!!!!! This is the same dealership who told me they would not have one in for 2 weeks and they would ring me as soon as they get one in. In this time of recession you would think they could be ar**ed enough the ring the people who have expressed a genuine interest. I am cross and dissapointed but not surprised to be honest. Unfortunatly living up north the next nearest OPC is miles away and the nearest two are both owned by the same group anyway! I really cant see the point of complaining either - what good will it do??? Its not as if they are not going to try to rip me off on the trade in anyway....

No wonder Porsche sales are slumping with sales teams like this. If I had slackers like this working for me they would be getting some very sharp feedback indeed!

I have been speaking with more than one client over the last few days who have been in to OPC's this week trying to buy pre facelift 2nd hand cars and have found the salespeople completely disinterested in making a sale - without the client even trying to have a negotiation - they just don't seem bothered from the outset.

Maybe this is because they are all so behind on their targets that a sale or two isn't going to get them into commission/bonus territory that they just can't be bothered. Where is the pride in that?
