Side windows

In the early hours of Sunday morning, some nice person broke into my car and lifted my radar detector and iPod (tearing off the lid of the cassette box to get to it). To do this he broke the passenger door window.

Lovely.[][][][][][][][][]

Anyway, I took the car to RAC Auto Windscreens yesterday for them to fit the new window. When I got it back, the window didn't fit properly. The original had a slight curvature front to back, and the one that they fitted was straight, therefore leaving a gap between the glass and the weather strip. The fitter didn't seem to have noticed this, which I think was a bit strange. However, there was no dispute about it being wrong.

They are going to order the correct glass for me for tomorrow, but the guy I spoke to said that they only had that one listed for the 944.

My question is. What are the different glasses fitted to the 944? I would assume that the glass that they had supplied was from and early model 944, or possibly it was a mislabelled glass for a 924?

My car is a 1988 944S.

I'd like to be able to give them a call this morning and let them know where they went wrong so that I can be certain that they get the correct one this time.

Thanks

I can't imagine thet 924 or early 944 had a different glass either - as far as I know the doors are all interchangeable.

Maybe you can switch the whole doors, but the glass might be different.

This window is definitely different from the one on the dirver's side (as well as the obvious being a mirror image thing of course).

Surely they can't be producing glass for the 944 that doesn't fit properly.

I don't believe there is different door or glass. When I said interchangeable I meant the same in all but detail.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

That's what I'm beginning to suspect. Although I really can't see how RAC Auto Windscreens can have been fitting these to cars and the owners not noticing. I would be surprised if I was the first person with a 944 to have a new side window from them.

I just spoke to RAC Auto Windscreens and they're going to make sure that the replacement window comes from a different manufacturer.

For future reference:

Dorglass make the window that doesn't fit properly.

Sekirut make the original glass, which fits nicely.

I imagine every batch of glass made might well be put out to tender and it's entirely possible that the manufacturer who made the one that doesn't fit made a whole order that don't fit. Quite likely they won the contract by being cheapest and the reason they were cheapest was that they didn't notice the curvature is the second plane. It isn't unlikely that nobody would notice until the glass was fitted and that not many have been yet - poor communication between RAC Autoglass depots would be the last link in the chain.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I had to have 2 windscreens fitted to the hearse recently, the first having the wrong connection for auto wipers/lights sensor. Supposedly it was supplied wrong by BMW even though there is only one screen listed for a 2002 5 series. The second is correct and has an RAC Autowindscreens logo, the first didn't.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I have heard of these problems before with replacing glass, particularly windscreens, and if I remember correctly this was the subject of several articles in PP. If your replacement is under an insurance claim, then it is better to get the work done by an OPC who will get the proper Porsche glass replacement.

Some time ago I had my windscreen shattered and I had it replaced by the OPC to avoid such problems. The only annoying thing was that the OPC made me pay up front and I had to reclaim the money, less the excess, from my insurance company, but that came through very fast.
