I'd rather pay more tax on fuel & have no car tax, congestion charges, 4x4 levies etc. Taxing the fuel makes sense to me, the more you use (either mileage or mpg) the more you pay. It's the other stuff that's nonsense, not the fuel tax imo.

Tricky one this.

My environmental head says high fuel tax is a fair way to tax pollution.

It is entirely our choice to use a gas guzzling car or to employ our free time in pursuits which burn fossil fuels. Take it to an extreme: If petrol was £10 a litre the roads would be virtually empty. Think how much fun we could have then - granted not as often as now perhaps.

What Gauls me however is our nanny state takes it upon its self to save the planet when, proportionally,we are so small as to make not a jot of difference. I don't know but I would be surprised if the whole UK population drove V8's 24 hrs a day or walked if this would make an iota of difference on the level of pollution the rest of the world continues to produce.

I agree... just taxing the fuel would be the only fair way, BUT, thats not going to happen for a very long time if ever so at the the moment we have to pay twice and thats a rip off , i mean i wouldnt mind if they used the extra cash to fill the pot holes , but hey thats another story.

Great until such time as any future government decides an immediate, but temporary, injection of funds is necessary and reintroduces it so we'd end up paying twice. Don't believe that it wouldn't happen. Ask the Canadians about the temporary income war tax

" In 1917, the Income War Tax Act introduced a "˜temporary' tax on corporate and personal income. After the war, the government was paying $164 million a year in interest on the debt created during the war, and $76 million per annum in soldiers' pensions. This was more than the entire federal budget before the war. As a result, income tax became a regular feature of the Canadian economy. Vehicle taxes bring in over £40 billion a year, spend on roads is under £7Bn.
High raw fuel prices brings the chancellor a bonus as it is taxed as it comes out the north sea.
This bonus could be used to give us a break when the price goes up. There is around 230% tax on our fuel.
Expensive fuel means higher costs for everything we buy.
If we all stopped driving tommorow we would have no effect on the climate.

Yep, this is just a scam for the government to whip up a storm and get more tax out of us. Is it me but in the last 10yrs or so have we been digging deeper and deeper into our pockets and handing over our hard earned cash to hand over to Mr Brown and getting less and less back in return?

The problem is that North Sea oil is not the right type of oil for Petrol. Unfortunately it's the Arabs who control that market. Taxing fuel is the only fair way, however the problem is that tax is so high on fuel at the moment if we were to abolish tax and increase the tax on fuel even more it would make fuel ridiculously expensive. I'm not sure what the answer is anymore. The more and more I hear the more pessimistic I get about this wonderful country of ours!! I've always been anti-Europe but the bigger China and Russia gets the more I'm thinking we need to be part of something bigger as they are the two economies that will dominate in 5 - 10yrs time and they are not exactly pleasant regimes.

The thing that amazes me is that in other countries they run their economies without making the motorist a 'milch cow'. To take 40odd billion £'s and only spend a fraction on roads (when they are so poorly maintained) is little short of criminal. But then they have got to secure a nice big pot of money so that they can vote themselves ever-fatter salaries and gold-plated pensions.
Incidentally, when petrol went over the £1 litre point the BBC news did a 'breakdown' of how it was split. They gave a figure of "6p per litre profit for the retailer".
Seeing red at such 'spin' I emailed the BBC. My local supermarket gives 10p per litre off if you spend £50+ in store. There is NO WAY he is selling at a loss.
Second point is that a neighbour works for a garage and saw a petrol company invoice left on a desk [:-]. The profit margin ? 18p per litre.
I rather fimly suggested the BBC had a duty to report facts not fiction. They did not bother to change/research the figures or come back to me.

As to the bigger picture of Global Warming. It is a hook to hang greater taxes on - and to a very large extent it is over-egged by the 'Anxiety Industry' i.e. people paid fat salaries to keep submitting scare stories to the media. The experts that pop up on TV get paid rather well to be prophets of Doom. I am quite sure there is some climate change - but there has been throughout history. I read an interesting article about some scientist who cut cross sections through stalactites and made the astounding [8|] discovery that there had been periods of greater or lesser rainfall over many thousands of years.
My other personal favourite was when York had flooding a year or two ago. The TV reporter stood by a building and showed the tide mark. Also visible was a very similar previous high-water mark plaque from 1735 or some such! Wonder what they blamed it on then .....

The earth is evolving and there and there isn't nothing we can do to stop it no matter what people think, this world doesn't belong to us and it never has and for that reason mother nature will do it what she pleases, [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

At one stage a few years ago the chaps at NASA came up with two graphs, one showing peaks and troughs of overall world weather patterns, the other showing sunspot activity. When you placed them together there was almost perfect correlation i.e. the Sun and sunspots are the dominant historical factor in changing weather patterns. The Anxiety Industry has chosen to ignore this .............

Someone (don't know who) once said :- "The history of the world is all about change - and so far everything is precisely on course."
