Silkolene Oil

If you don't drive the car hard, I would use the 5W-40, if you are, I would be more inclined to use the 10W-50. 5W will be thinner than 10W when cold so will circulate and protect quicker on start up whereas the 50 will be thicker than the 40 at high temperature hence give better protection under hard driving. The engine will tend to consume less oil if using the 10W-50 oil. I'm using 0W-40 Mobil 1 at the moment, as I don't drive it that hard but want quick circulation on start-up. The 944 is not my everyday car so the oil will drain into the sump during the long periods of inactivity meaning quick circulation is important to reduce wear.

I'm on Pro R 5w50 and oil consumption is way below the handbook prescribed 1ltr per 1500km. In fact before my last track day at Bedford I hadn't had to top the oil up for about 5kmiles, but I topped it up immediately after Bedford and had to put in half a litre or so since. I intend to fit a oil temp guage to see what temp the oil gets to on a track day and if it gets much above normal road temps i'll either go to a thicker oil or fit a second oil cooler. I'd rather stick to a thinner oil and increase the cooling capabiliy of the oil cooling system as most of my driving is on the road.

From the descriptions Pro R appears to be 'Race proven' (whatever that means) whereas Pro S is appears to be aimed more for road cars. Both are Ester based. I hadn't really appreciated there were 2 types as I was recommended the Pro R. No price difference from Opie oils which is where I get it from - though i'm not sure if thats the cheapest source.

Opie oils have always recommended Pro S to me (including when I've told them that they are aware the engine gets track use and appears to runs quite hot). Perhaps the R version is more suited to the stress a turbo car puts on its oil?
Best regards,
Peter
