Sill repairs

New member
MOT on Wednesday and he managed to find a hole in the N/S sill. I have started stripping back the metal work. Sill, jacking tube support and kidney bowl all need replacing plus small repair on B-post. Know how to do most of the job now after doing O/S last year.
Have been looking at the good range of panels on Pelican ie panel to repair bottom of rear wing where it joins the sill. Has anyone had any experience of buying parts from Pelican and getting them over to here is it a viable proposition or do the postage charges kill it.
Baz

At long last the car is now MOTd ended up replacing B-post, kidney bowl, jack support, and outer sill. Took wing off to see how bad it was, very bad! managed to get a good second hand one. Whilst the wing was off found more rust behind the bumper iron support bracket. Took that off Porsche only at about £70 plus VAT so repaired the bracket and plated inner wing next to battery then fitted bracket back on. Huge washer bottle is a great rust trap so have done away with that and put one from a Peugeot 405 inside the boot area, the wiring from the pump mounted on the slam panel even fits onto the new pump, need to make a bracket to support new bottle when on night shift next. Bottle was £5 from scrap yard.
Next job is paint have been quoted £1600-1800 for complete respray might strip car myself to save a bit of money. Have got some freshley painted bumpers, sill panels and bumper panels to go on when painted. This week want to drive the car though might go to Porsche and 911 picnic in the park at Badmington. Anyone else going? You wont miss my car black with a greeny gold wing.

Congrats on the MOT Baz [;)]

Found some rust on mine the other day; also behind battery (looks more like a combination of battery wearing against wing and acid from battery leaking out in places and against metal causing corrosion though)

Yet to plate the hole but have got the mini-grinder on it, cleaned it all up and hammerited it for the time being...

Wow Baz more power to your elbow, the work continues, you must feel you've rebuilt that car! Were you're wings sealed to the body with anything where the line of fixing nuts is and are you going to Brands with the car?

John
That hole in your inner wing is right behind the bracket that holds the bumper iron might be worth you removing the washer bottle and having a look at the extent of the corrosion on the bracket. Plating it over from inside of the inner wing will help but you need to get rid of as much rust as possible.
Bones
I think the old wing was sealed with a strip of mastic type material and then the underseal was sprayed right up to it. I have not put anything between the join yet as the wing might be getting moved when the car is sprayed. I have got some strips of mastic that car firms use to bond rubbing strips onto cars these are about 1/2 inch wide and stick like the proverbial to a blancket. I will be coming to Brands on the Monday as I have got to work the rest of the weekend, not sure how many colours the car will be though. Is yours up and running again yet?
Regards Baz

yes I'll be at Brands with my SC it's running great but I need to remove a stripped head stud Monday I think. For Brands I may need some volunteers for a special project might you be interested?

Cheers Baz, will will lay a piece in, not just cover it over. Stripping all the front end off for paint in the winter and sort it properly then [;)]

Bones,Baz,
I've just looked at a 3.2 Carrera for a friend which had similar rust to what you have described, although difficult to assess the real extent or depth. With your experience what could my friend expect to pay for these repairs, just a ballpark figure. He can then use this to negotiate.
Thanks guys

Ian

Ian look at some other cars there are clean cars out there just be patient you don't want to buy problem Porsches they are money pits unless you can do all the work yourself.

You are right Bones but my friend paid £275 for a thorough PPI and wants the car, he is quite excited now that he has management clearance to get a 911 at last. I do remember the feeling!!!!! The main issue appears to be the rust, which is repairable, but may cost too much.

If you mean the B-post repairs I spent about £150 on panels and a lot of hours doing the job. Only the second time I have done one but this time I have done the whole job myself, others on the forum have paid £600 upwards including paint, by time you have welded the B-post panel in you will need to paint the door shut and all or part of the back wing. The inner wing by the battery is not such a bad job and could be done without taking the wing off provided the bumper iron bracket is not rotten, mine was and I had to remove the bracket and repair that as well then weld it back on. If it only needs a patch cutting in I would say a decent bodyshop should be able to do that in half a day. I was replacing the wing on mine at the same time so I saw the extent of the rot and cut it all out and replaced with fresh metal.
Hope this helps Baz

Thanks Baz,
I think that I will advise him to walk away from this one, mainly because it is not really possible to see how bad it is until everything is stripped off. The search continues, know of any good SCs up to £11500 ish?

Thanks again
Ian

Ian,
Mines available for 11,500 I have started my own business and the cash would be helpful. I am not selling because I want to get rid but cash flow is up and down and this would solve a lot of problems. The car is reasonably well sorted it is a 82 Targa gaurds red with a really comprehensive history 130k miles and lots of work. Front and one rear wing, total strip down and respray by top gun (same company as Peter Morgan uses) recent new roof and front seats by South bound gear box rebuild about 25 k ago. Engine rebuild about 20k ago down to crank (long story which I will explain if your friend is interested) refurbed calipiers all round, Brigdestone SO3's, turbo tie rods, new biltstiens about 30k ago, cd changer, new engine oil cooler last year, exhaust sound but standard, nearly all of the body rubbers/seals replaced in the last three years (includding tea tray), wheels where refurbished about 4 years ago. I also had the cars original registration number restored a cuople of years ago after much fighting with the DVLC, I think the car looks as good as it did the day it came out of AFN. It has the original tool kit, gloves and servce mat/sheet.The only thing I think that doesnt work is the head light flasher lever. I have just overhauled the heater system with new flapper boxes and cables.
I live near to Burford, Oxfordshire. If your friend is interested let me know and we can arrange to meet some where. Once my bussiness takes off I will definatley be buying another SC as of all the older 911's I think they drive the best and are really useable as a daily driver.
I have lots of pictures e-mail me if you want them.

Understated as ever - the car looks great Mark!

Very nice chap in the next village to me thinking of selling his really beautiful Turbo-bodied Targa complete with 3+3 plate, LHD but absolutely mint, he wants £11k for his one too. New exhaust a year ago and £6k engine rebuild 2k miles ago. Amazing the value you can get on the old SC's - though prices seem to be steadying somewhat IMO.

Thanks Mark, John,
I'll pass these on even though he was not looking for a Targa. He fancies a coupe but if the condition/price were right he might go for one. We'll see.
Thanks guys

Ian

Mark,
I forwarded the edtails fo your car to him and have just received a text saying that he would like to have a look. How can he get in touch, should I e-mail you outside of the Forum?
