Sills...

Having thoroughly (I thought) checked the car for rust when I got it, it turns out there is some in the sills. I have had a camera down and its in several patches all on the outside edge of the sill, its 85% good metal but its starting to bubble on the outside of the sill. Am I best to get the sills replaced or have them patched? also where would be the best place to go to get the work done? I'm in Oxfordshire.

Hope that made sense [:)] and any help would be great!

Ollie

Sill replacement isn't going to be cheap - £1200 per side, about, I imagine. Obviously, I can't say how bad it is without seeing it. You may beable to patch it to get it through MOTs and the like but when do you stop patching and do a "proper job"?

If you're going to be replacing sills, get your car up in the air and look at anything else that needs doing under there as well. [:)]

You're not alone, most 944s seem to be rather rotten undeerneath now. It's nothing that can't be solved with time and money. I do fear this will be the end for a lot of 944s when they fail MOT's on rust.[:(]

From the description it is not an MOT failure now, though, and nowhere near it from the sound of the thing. If it is small areas of the sill then a proper repair job can be done which will maintain structural integrity. If that is properly done - i.e. ALL the rust cut out and suitable small repair sections let in, and properly corrosion-protected - then it might well be another 10 years before it needs further work in the area.

Here's a place not that far from Oxford that has a good reputation for body restoration work on front-engined Porsches: they are taking mine in a few weeks..

Where I agree with Pixie is that not many owners seem to be prepared to put in the restoration effort and expenditure to keep these cars in good condition for the long term, and that is what is causing the population to reduce quickly at the moment.

Hi Oliver, I just finnished having my sills welded yesterday. I ,like you noticed some bubbling on the stone chip coating. First thing I did was remove the paint and stone chip by running a knife along top of stonechip, then scraping off with scraper and heatgun. This revealed the extent of repair work needed. I needed repair to bottom of both front wings, small repair (4'' *2") at front of passenger sill, bottom of rear quarter panel and small 4"*4" repair to rear of sill where rear quarter goes behind. Drivers side bottom of rear quarter and 10" along sill, most of which was to allow access to inner sill repair. I think this area had suffered from a misplaced jack and a botched repair allowing mopisture to be trapped. I cut out all the affected metal myself and fabricated new metal with limited tools, spayed zinc primer into any area i could while holes were available. Then had a friend weld it all up for me. Just need painting now.

I would imagine the right bodyshop could strip it back to let you see before going ahead with further work.

New sills are available from Porsche at about £160 per side, though lower quarter panel would be handy as I think that's worst affected area.

Hope this helps, I am going to try uploading some pics later this week.

Alan.

Without seeing it its difficult to say, can you post some pictures? Perhaps if its starting to show on the outside it may be a good opportunity to nip it in the bud, I doubt you would need new sills though, as recommend Daytona have done alot of these cars and come highly rated. They could patch and repair for reasonable cost.

Hi guys, thanks for all the advice. I will try and get some pics up tomorrow so you can tell me what you think. Sounds just like what you had Alan, without the corrosion on the inner sill from what I have seen. Would be handy to see what condition yours were in. I'm certainly not afraid to get my hands dirty, and the last thing I want to do is bodge things with such a wonderful car!

I don't think its an MOT failure yet, and I have owned a few rusty old Land Rovers! But I do want to get the car back in tip top condition and stop it from getting worse. Its now dry stored and only gets a run when the sun comes out or when I feel the need to have a little fun...

Daytona certainly sounds like the place to go. High praise indeed if you lot recommend them judging by the stunning cars on the forum!

Will post some pics tomorrow and thanks once again!

My s2 needed major work. Although to start with it looked like a bit of a bubble at the back of the sill.If you look at my what lies beneath posts you will see what i mean.

The inner sill corrosion on my car I think was brought on by poorly repaired damage from missplaced jack before I had the car.

My car was still passing MOT's.

Catch it early and apply some form of rust proofing and it should be fine for years to come, and prevent the £1200 senario if you ignore it.

Hi all, sorry I haven't had the chance to get any pictures up. After weeks of not much work I have been snowed under [&:] I'll get into the workshop on Friday and get some pics posted. Keen to get the problem sorted.

Hi Ollie. As implied by others, worth getting your car to someone who knows what they're doing. I took mine to Specialised Paintwork at Theale (behind Reading OPC). Lots of PCGB members have used them...Karl used to own a 944 and does 3 or 4 every month apparently.

They cut out all corroded metal and welded in steel plate, managed to keep the repair below the stone chip paint line, lots of photos and showed me the rotten bits afterwards. Total for n/s cill and lower front wing, then o/s lower front wing was about £1300 after PCGB discount.

Worth having it done properly, but don't delay...won't get cheaper if you leave it of course!!!
