silly question

I have bought a new set of rims for my 944

I have seen them on another 944 and having spoke to the chap he said he was running 6mm spacers on front but would recomend 10mm and with no spacers on the back.

the wheel dimension is 18" 8J with 57 offset.

just though I would canvas your opinion and what would be best and whether or not I would need longer wheel studs etc if spacers are required.

I have some tyres on order at moment so can't offer them up to vehicle hence my question

thanks to all that can help

It depends what car you have.

If it is an early car (83-86) then it will have pre ABS hubs and the standard wheels will have an offset of ET23 so you need 30-35mm spacers to put the wheel back in the right place.

If you have an 87 onwards car the standard wheels have an offset of ET52 so your ET57 will make it sit 5mm out, which should be fine

These two websites will help you know what you should have, and what spacer you need to fit the replacements:

thankyou for the reply but I'm confused as to what my car is now!

its a 1985 NA and the rims I have a phone dial 15" 6J with
et 52.3mm as stamped on wheel. this doesn't appear to fall into any of those groups on that website.
the car is very old now of course so it's possible these are not the original wheels so is there another way of telling.

cheers
Paul

The only Teledials I have heard of in 6" width were originally from a 924S (I believe)

Check out the felgengewichte section of this website for pictures of all the wheel designs

If you do have 6" ET52 wheels on an '85 car then it should already have 30mm spacers or the wheel will sit very far inside the arches and look a bit silly. Or maybe your car has had the later hubs fitted - lots can happen in 23 years with many owners on a Porsche

If you have bought Porsche wheels you will need to use a 6mm (minimum) spacer on the front. If not the wheels will not seat properly.

I think this applies to any wheel from a later model car, but I know for certain that if the part number is 996xxxxxxxx. you need the spacers.

I've put boxster wheels on mine and needed the spacer

I will take a picture of them tomorrow and see what you think.

I did not see any spacers fitted but I only checked the rear.
+ the wheels I have on it are BBS and the spare set the car came with are the teledials. neither of which I will use.

will speak again soon. stay tuned

well I've been out to it and taken wheels off to find that there was spacers fitted to rear (20mm) and spacers fitted to front (40mm) with BBS cross spoke rims fitted.

unfortunatly I could no see any marks quoting width and offset values so I decided to go about it a crude way.

I used a striaght edge across wing arch and measured the dimension from edge to rim face. With my new wheels I measured a further 15mm so even with these spacers the rim sits futher in the arch on both front and rear which you would expect.

intentions are to use spacers currently on front to the rear and purchase new spacers for front. Mind you , the spacers on the front are going to be ginormous at 60mm.
