This may be a silly question but as I am more used to later model Porsches please bear with me.

Was air conditioning standard on UK standard C2 & C4 964s or was it an optional extra?
 
A rare option. Both of the RHD cars with air con I considered turned out to be imports from a RHD market such as Singapore, Hong Kong or Australia.
 
Air con was supplied as an (expensive) option. I believe the following option codes would highlight it on the Vehicle Identification: Not sure which one is 964 specific, though the option code on my '90 C4 is 573
399 - Air Conditioning without front condenser
559 - Air Conditioner
563 - Automatic air conditioner
570 - High output air conditioner
573 - Air Conditioner

As Fen mentioned, many with air con are imports. Country Code C16 is for England and should be found in the service manual or under luggage compartment lid on label
