Silver 944 turbo went pop at Bedford...

Looking at pistonheads (as you do) it appears someone bought a 944 turbo recently and took it to Bedford for a track day. The poor sod had it blow up on him in a major fashion - engine internals all over the track. You've got to feel for him. Assuming the previous owner had no idea there was an issue, they had a close escape having just sold it. Anyone any more insight into this?
Cheers
Mick

Doesn't say much on the PH thread to identify the owner or the car really but must have been a painful event!

Total guess on my part but I did see the following silver 944T track car sell recently....

Could be this one????

Thanks. Sorry for not putting in the link chaps.

Looks like Bedford and 944's don't mix...

i guess we'll never know what caused the problem

Sounds sadly reminiscent of what happened to Fen's turbo on a pre dyno run at Silverstone back in 2006 or 7.

IIRC it blew the bottom end on a road test before going on the rollers. Don't think I'd be looking so cheery if it had happened to me and have to be trailered back to Devon []

Anyone know what happened to Fen's car? I believe it was up for sale minus engine before he moved to N.Z

Are you sure the Chargers smoke wasnt his early and looooooong braking setting fire to his pads

Last I heard Fen's car was his mechanic and Fen was considering options.

Interestingly I think one of the biggest problems was that he had left it too long without tax and mot to take the plate off, which was worth a mahoosive amount of cash and a quick DVLA check shows that 9EX is not registered to anything, so I am guessing somehow the reg was transfered off onto retention.. So either someone did something naughty or the car went back on the road so the plate could be taken off.

well with any newly purchase ....one "should" always check that the car is up to it for track day event !!

Not easy to check that the engine's not about to let go though...

If it's the one from ebay, then it was an ex-racecar with recent history. Unless it was making some horrible noises, or showing low oil pressure, how would you know?

I was at Bedford on Saturday in my new 944. 99% sure the car on the ebay link above was the same car less its stickers. It's a light blue, not silver.

I got the impression on the day that it was a transmission issue, not engine. The mess spread most of the length of the back straight out of slowish bed, so I cannot see an engine keep going that long or the car make it that far without the driver knowing.

I had intended to catch up with the owners as it looked a very nice car, but it happened quite early on and then they left.

A great shame, but lets hope they get it sorted and at least no one was hurt.

Those of us who have tracked Turbos with older engines know all too well that they can use 10x as much oil on track as they do on the road. With a new purchase he may not even have checked the level in between sessions and ended up just running dangerously low and then BOOM! [&o]

Pretty sure the plate went onto retention before the MOT ran out
