Well - that was interesting! Really wet - and I mean really wet - in the morning and early afternoon, and then dried out (very quickly!). Rained again for the last 30 minutes. According to my mileometer, I did 71 laps.
General thoughts:
1. The Cayenne does like to understeer, particularly in the wet.
2. If it had not been wet, I would not have much tyre life left, although the wear seems to have been even across the treads
3. Cornering speed was quite respectable and not a lot of roll, although my entry speed was probably not as good as it should have been.
4. A couple of sudden opposite lock moments, mainly whilst the track was drying out. Then I got a distinct feeling for how heavy the thing is. Most likely it was due to me misreading the conditions!
5. A new respect for the F1 drivers dealing with changing Silverstone track conditions. There are really significant changes lap by lap. It is simply amazing how quickly the wind dries the track!
6. Most Caterham drivers are barking. Friendly but barking! However they do not do so well on slicks when the rain comes down, but in the dry, their cornering speed was staggering.
7. The Ginetta G40 (?) also has amazing cornering speed, but not much speed on the straight. I had to keep lifting on the straights to let them by as their times over the complete lap was faster. It was not only me, there was an Aston DB8, and an Audi RS5 that were sharing a garage with me that had to do the same. It had been mentioned in the morning briefing.
8. There is a big meeting this Saturday and Sunday and I would guess that there are races for the Caterhams and the Ginettas included. There were some very professional racing teams in the paddock.
A good day all round. There is more life in the tyres, so I guess that I will have to do another one (or more!!).
