Slide the rear end ! Gulp !

Hi Guys.

Well I had my 1983 944 for about 2 weeks now, and it seams that every time I am out in it, at least once I sm spinning the rear end round.

So my question is ..

a) how to do it properley, dukes-of-hazard styl-ee lol and ...

b) how not to do it


Is there a way to perfect this ? when it happens my heart stops, should I continue to put the power down with opposite lock ? or come off the power and straighter her up ?

Any ideas on what / what not to do ?

Matt,

You can not do it "properly" on the road. You will end up crashing the car, losing your licence, or killing someone; or all three.

To stop it, go slower and don't put the power on so franticaly as you exit the roundabout. Feed in the power relative to the traction. If it does start to slip just ease off the power gently untill the back end grips again.

Check your rear tyres and tyre pressures.

Can I assume from your comments that your previous car was front wheel drive? [;)]

All of the above advice is very sound, I'd only add try a club track day and spend some time with an instructor who will really help adapt your driving style to your car. You never know you may get bitten by the track day bug.

In the interim can you let us know which areas you frequent, I don't want to spend the next six months avoiding all white 944's

And yes its me first rear wheel drive car ;)

I think maybe your both right, and I should calm it down a bit.

I been for a run this morning, couldnt sleep, was 8am, dark, and I lay awake thinkin .. I got a bleedin white Porsche 944 sat on the drive, sod this, am out for a play.

So went for a nice long run, with me Super Unleaded in, and was good on the road until I came back to Tescos.

So I practiced it in there, lol its great fun, and I agree, I wouldnt like to do it on the road where there are cars in motion around me.

I guess I'll just get me missus to film me doin it in Tescos car park on a Sunday then losin the rear end, and call it a day, but you guys are completley right in what your saying, thanks for the reality check.

But its bloody good fun though isnt it ! lol.

P.S. Does any one know what the four switches are in the 944 next to the gear stick ? I know one is for wing mirrors, and one for rear wiper, but the other two symbols have worn off the buttons and dont do anything.

Ejector seat on the left and anchor deployment on the right for when you really lose it....

From left to right on mine are:

door lock
mirrors
rear wiper
sunroof

Ditto what the rest of the guys have said, with bells on!!!!

What tyres you running, if there budget cheepo try changing them for a good brand that specially in wet and check tyre pressure to. My 944 S2 is the best hadling car i've driven and a MK2 GTI. If you had a 911 you'd be doing donuts off rounda bouts. Take care son!

From left to right on mine are:

door lock
mirrors
rear wiper
sunroof

I've never seen two where all the switches are in the same order! Maybe the Germans have a sense of humour after all.

(mine L-R: wiper, door lock, mirrors, sunroof)
 
If you lift that panel up those switches can all be moved from one position to the other, so I think previous owners have moved them to their own particular preference. A lot of people struggle to find the rear wiper in the dark and end up opening the sunroof, so move that one to the far right so it's closest.

Matt, yours is an '83 early dash model so your buttons don't look like those in the picture. I have no idea what the other two do [&:]
