Slight Oil Leak

Guest

New member
Hi,

Took my car on a bit of a long drive over the weekend and yesterday I noticed a small patch of oil on my garage floor after resting the car for the night. I never noticed this before but it seems to be coming from the middle of the car around the engine area.

Any Ideas???

Any advice would be appreciated

Quite likely the Rear Main Seal leaking. Not uncommon.
Search for RMS, grab a bag of popcorn and clear your appointment book for the night!
If you have a Porsche Warranty, it will be covered, if not you won't really need to replace it until you replace your clutch or the patches become too annoying.
IIRC Porsche charge around £700 to replace it (its actually a very cheap part, but it's a gearbox out job)

Do you know if I can take out 12months Porsche warranty? As I currently dont have warranty. [:(]

Unless the car is under a warranty, you will need an inspection and any works required will have to be done before the warranty is issued

Note, an RMS is half the price from an independant rather than an OPC

Getting the clutch done at same time (if needed) saves money

Normally RMS can be left to your convenience to fix

RMS = Rear Main Seal

OPC = Official Porsche Centre (actually - they like to be just known as "Porsche Centres" these days). This is in contrast to an "Independant Porsche Specialist" (Independant) who are not part of the official Porsche dealer network.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know of a good independant within the Birmingham area who would carry out this work at a reasonable price rather going through an OPC??

Have been scouting around and have managed to find a place local that will look at my oil leak for me. Am taking it in This Saturday for the Porsche tech to have a look and book me in.

Wasn't liking the idea of a normal everyday mechanic looking at my car, after all it is a Porsche.

Anyway for anyone else who wants information on the garage in the birmingham area the link is below.

Will post info on the outcome of the oil leak when I get it done.

Apparently, the latest seal design and fitting tool significantly reduces the chance of a further failure.

If you go to an independent, make sure that they have the latest technical service notes on the subject.

I have seen several reports lately that Porsche is now honouring RMS leaks on non warranted cars, provided they have a full Porsche service history. I dare say there is some limit in terms of age / mileage in their logic, but at least its a better position than 12 months ago - at long last they are starting to accept their engineering failures

Wow thats interesting. I have emailed my local OPC to find out more. Will let you know the reply.

I took my car in yesterday and with in 2 mins of being under the car he said strait away it's the RMS. He said it will be worth getting my clutch replaced also to save money if I was keeping the car. I knew he wasn't pulling the wool over my eyes cos it's been mentioned about the clutch in previous posts. Its going to cost me around £650 all in, which I don't think is a bad price. He is also going to replace some other seals also....can't remember what they are but something to do with a shaft???

I have got to phone him tomorrow and get it booked in. If anyone wants work done on there Porsche in the Midlands area I would recommend this place cos he really seems to know what he's talking about (Martin Brown). Lots of Porsche's there too if you're looking to buy one.

I've not had to replace a clutch - so I can't be sure, but as it would cost that much for the RMS work alone at an OPC, then that seems reasonable.

Did the independant say how he knows the clutch needs doing (without having taken the car apart)? On 944's there was an inspection plug that you could check the clutch through - I'm not aware of this on a Boxster. Would be nice to know if there is one.

He just advised me to replace the clutch as it would save me money in the long run.

With regards to the OPC honouring RMS leaks on non warranted cars they replied with the following statement.

OPC said
The statement on the website is correct to a degree. Porsche do operate warranty goodwill system for repairs of a certain age and mileage. Unfortunately your vehicle, although low mileage, falls outside the limits of age. Therefore at this point, this system would not be able to reimburse you for any repairs.

I will raise the question about the inspection plug for the clutch on a Boxster when I take my boxster in. I have got it booked in for 3 days from the 20th April. Guess I will have to put up with the oil leaks till then.

How old is your car, as it would be interesting to understand the age that Porsche feel is acceptable for an RMS to be changed at their cost.

A strange thing has happened, over the last 4 days I have no oil leaking from under the car. i put down a fresh piece of cardboard onto my garage floor and to my surprise, no oil.

Can it repair itself??
