Slight squeak

Hi guys ive noticed a slight squeak and it sounds as tho its coming from the back left hand side of the car (imagine your sat in the drivers seat). Im thinking possibly my water pump bit that runs off the auxillery belt might be the reason. Im fairly sure its not a mouse as the squeak tends to go away when the engine has warmed up.

Cheers

Chris

A worn drive belt can cause exactly the same squeak. I would try a new one first. Look up www.mister-auto.co.uk with their 35% discount code and a Contitech or Gates belt is only £15 including delivery. My own car had a squeak but as the belt was only a year old I didn't think it was the cause and replaced nearly every pulley, pump and alternator. In the end it was the belt.

I think i had the belt replaced around 2 years ago. Do they only last that long?

They usually last much longer than that. If you can pinpoint the squeak specifically - using a stethescope or removing the drive belt and looking for rough running pulleys or play in the water pump, then fix the offending item. If not £15 is cheap to replace a belt before spending big bucks. My own power steering pump had a dry bearing noise when warm and everyone was convinced that was the cause. It was still present after I changed it and it turned out to be my 1 year old original Porsche belt that was resonating on the big aluminium pulley.

Spray some WD40 on the belt as it's running and see if it helps. :) Despite a little squeek it shouldn't need replacing after 2 years, the service interval is 80.000 km.
