The leather on my steering wheel is very shiny and not particularly easy to grip. Is there anything that can be done to improve it?

The smoothness is due to just the abrasive nature of hands and also body oils/hand cream from your hands.Try a good leather cleaner and also clean after with alcohol cleaner (isopropanol ) which will degrease the surface. This should open the leather a little and will feel rougher. It may need some redying and protecting.
