Sloppy gear change

I've suffered from a sloppy gear change, making 2nd from 3rd impossible in a hurry, I always believed it to be a problem of the gubbins on top of the gearbox.

So now I've got the whole car 2ft off the deck and crawled around and taken the the gubbins off:

There's a tiny amount of play in the nylon joint but very minor, am I looking in the wrong place?

Should I just put it back?

How much play can be tolerated?

Ideas please
 
What's the gearbox mount like? I sometimes find 3rd to 2nd difficult when braking hard and I suspect that this miht be making it worse. My gear change is a bit vague at the best of times. I have sampled a JMG short shifter that replaces the "gubbins" - it's a transformation.
 
I fitted an only944 short shifter, brace bar and front shifter a couple of months ago and it has transformed the shift of the car. Did a trackday at Cadwell at the weekend and it was fantastic. I dealt with a guy called Kyle and he was great at informing me of the shipping etc and the bits took 5 days to come from the states too. The whole lot was also significantly less expensive than many of the alternatives.
 
I copied the Only944 shifter by drilling the oin out of mine and welding in another pin and bolting it together with a pair of thrust washers. Whole cost 1 hour plus £2 for the thrust washers.

I have fitted the JMG front and rear gear change kits to the 924S race car - the rear being the short shifter. Pricey but beautifully engineered and made. Not been on track with it yet. But the change quality on the drive around the yard was night and day to the sloppy change I had before. This is really precise and feels lovely!
 
Gerry, Before you go too hugger-mugger with the short-shift kit make sure that all the standard kit is in good condition. Some people find they have a lot of play in the nylon lump on top of the gearbox, some people don't (mine didn't). However a common source of play is the pin on the gearstick itself - there is a guide to simply replacing the whole gearstick here: http://944foot2thefloor.blogspot.co.uk/2010/06/how-to-remove-and-replace-worn-gear.html Or, if you have more time and less money, you can replace just the pin with a length of 10mm stainless steel rod and a bit of time doing some simple engineering. If you want to go to town you can also drill out the hole on the end of the long shifter rod where it connects to the gearstick pin and use some plastic bushes from a 968. This means that the pin won't wear any further, and the bushes are cheaply and easily changed if need be.
