Sloppy gear shift

Whilst ime serviceng the old girl ide like to remove the sloppyness from the gear shift, I have read before somewhere that you can purchase a bush kit to sort this, is this correct?, If so where do I purchase this kit and where does it fit into the gear linkage, would it be the front or at the rear of the car?
Once again ime sure the site will come up trump's!

Agree with above might want to change the rear link as well. Have heard good reports on the wevo link which is expensive but very well made. I would recommend you do not buy the aftermarket kit to shorten the throw.This not only shortens the throw but also the cross gate bias and makes (in my opinion) the gearshift even more difficult. I put one on my SC and took it off in favour of the factory short shift, which does not close up the cross gate bias.Have a look on pistonheads or impactbumpers.com. I saw a factory short shift offered for sale on one of the sites(cant remember which one)

Thanks guys I will have a good look through the sites and see what I can find.
One question though Geoff you mention a linkage at the rear, is this the rod with a rose joint on either end positioned just proud of the floor tunnel or is there some other joint I have yet to find.

Replace the coupler in the tunnel behind the seats, mark up the positions as they are now to avoid having to reset everything and also change the bushing at the base of the gear shift.
 
Hi Bones, sorry to appear thick but this is an area I have not delved into much, is the coupler underneath the car when you say behind the seats as I have removed the large mounting plate from under the gear box / clutch housing before and found a few items coming from within the tunnel area, linkages and so on, is this where I should be looking.
Sorry, I am mechanically sound but still learning my way around the Porsche[:)]

It's ok Bazzer , you're not thick, just a matter of learning the lingo and the large amount of things the DIYer can do to keep these great cars running as they should.
I mean the inspection cover situated inside the cockpit and underneath the rear carpet behind the rear seats, undo the four screws and you will find the gearshift rod with the 'coupler' fastening the front part from the gearshift to the rear part - which is the g'box input shaft. They are located in the coupler by means of splines so mark theses old positions up otherwise you will have to reset it all, (not difficult but why make life difficult). To replace the bush at the base of the gearstick, you will have to dissasemble the whole thing.
 
Thanks for not being to hard on me Bones, Ive built road race motorcycles for 30 years, but this Porsch is extremely satisfying and extremely frustrating all at the same time, oh and not to mention a hell of a lot of FUN!.

Love to get together with you sometime Baz as I'm a very keen ex-motorcyclist (retired due to accident), I was practicing to take part in my first race and had A.C.U. novice papers. I'm moving to France soon so if you want to hook up I'm in Enfield North London till mid March.
 
A fellow biker eh Bones, good to hear i'me not the only biker dabbling with these beauties!.
Would be good to meet up if Poss and put a face to the name, same goes for a lot of the guy's that are so helpful on this site.
I know there is the odd few from the bath stroke west country area that have appeared on here from time to time but i dont see to many other 911's buzzing around so it feels a little isolated at times.
I unlike you Bones played with racing for 23 years, packing up in 2002, but like you had a few big crashes, one at Le Man at 170mph and sort off walked away, well carried I should say!!!.
May be we can meet half way somewhere for a catch up before you go, if you have any ideas where drop me a line and i'le see what we can sort.

Hi Simon, I'm moving to a hamlet near a town called Neuvy Bouin in Deux-Sevres, Poitou Charente. It's very rural and quiet with deserted beautiful country roads and sunshine. [;)]
 
Bath eh - I've fished in the River Avon many times as a child and in the Kennet and Avon canal, it's one of the few places in the country I would have moved to when I still considered the UK to be a country worth living in. Somerset, Avon, Wilts, Wessex, Dorset - Hardy's mythical 'Wessex' got to be up for one of the most beautiful regions of the UK. I like Bath particularly as a town, it has a lot going for it.
I think it's unlikely I'll be heading anywhere in the 911 before I hopefully leave in March but I'll still be on the forum when I get a French ISP and get on line. Maybe Le Mans will be an option.
 
I fitted a factory short shift kit to my 3.2 I think it's pretty good.

Get new parts first and see what you think, you can always buy the short shift after and take it off if you don't like it.

I would just get all the parts from your OPC as you want all genuine parts, too many bad experiences with other sellers of parts.
