Sloppy gear stick

Apologies, I know this has been done before but I can't find the original thread.

I have the sloppy gear stick issue and I remember reading that this was due to a worn plastic bushing under the gear stick. I also remember somebody mentioning that Jon Mitchell makes an improved version from a stronger material (phosphor bronze?).

Am I on the right lines?

Thanks

James

Yep, Jon was doing them on an exchange basis IIRC. If he's not along to confirm over the weekend I'd give him a call on Monday.

Thanks Paul, now spoken to Jon and one is on its way in the post.

For those who are searching this in the future, the lever has the mild steel pin replaced with a far more corrosion and wear resistant stainless steel one, thereby achieving a far more positive fit and removing the "sloppiness".

Apparently it's a simple job with a 13mm socket..... Perfect for the day after boxing day then. [;)]

It's arrived and for the benefit of others, here's what it looks like

Moderators - one for the FAQ?

Cheers

He's indi9xx on here, or you could ring him. His number used to be 01202 462951 but he has moved since I last spoke to him, though within the same dialling code so I expect it hasn't changed.

Do you mind saying how much Jon's version is?

Has anybody tried this version from 944Online?

Nope I don't mind. Once I have sent back my original gearshifter then it will have cost me £31 including postage.

Anyway all done now, took about 90 minutes including a hunt for some grease. Here are some tips for anybody looking to do it:

1. Have some moly grease to hand
2. You may wish to replace the plastic cup that the ball (at the bottom of the shift) sits in. I didn't, although I may go back to do it, and I suspect it's just pence from an OPC.
3. There's a foam bung arrangement in there, presumably to cut down noise and if yours is like mine some will have disintegrated so you might want to vacuum it out first.

It's definitely improved things, possibly to do with the ball/cup interface being tighter too and I now no longer have a sloppy gearshift.[:D]
