Sloppy Gears

My gearstick is a bit porridgey and Im sure I read on here that they knew someone who supplies a new doohicky that fixes it?

Yep, it was a refurbed part, so you bought a new gearstick from him and sent your old one back for a partial refund.

I can't find it on his website any more, so probably best to give him a call on 07000 996 911.

I hope it improves it a bit anyway!
I do still have a problem whereas it crunches a bit going into third, do you think thats a new gearbox job?

you could try changing / renewing the gearbox oil and it may help to soften the crunching. thats what i would do anyway.

Sorry to but in on this thread. But will this replacement sort my gear change?
Symptoms are that the gear stick moves two inches either way even when in gear.....

If this part will sort it, i will have some.....

It would certainly help Rav, the bush on the gearselector rod where the stick attaches wears over time. If you are friendly with anyone in an engineering firm, they could rebush it for not much dough,

That's exactly what the John Mitchell product is meant to cure, yes.

The gearstick linkage erodes over time because it's two metal parts rubbing against each other every time you move the stick. John Mitchell's product is a refurbed stick with a harder steel pin fitted than the original one. It also includes bushings to allow you to get the best possible fit with the potentially eroded loop that fits onto that.

There are two linkages in the gearchange: The linkage at the gearstick and the one on the gearbox at the back. The linkage on the gearbox end is a royal pain to get access to, so most people leave that alone and just do what they can to remedy any slack at the gearstick.

I'm lucky in that the previous owner of my car fitted a brand new (custom made) rear linkage as well, to give the car a shorter shift. Between that and the cut down short gearstick, my gearchange feels quite different any other 944 I've driven!

I wouldn't say the gearbox linkage is hard to get to but I had to use a puller to get it off.

Has anyone got any pictures or a 'how to' of what parts need replaced.

Do you need to take the gearlever out/off the car?

cheers

Wilber1986 - i have a pdf doc that i can mail to you with pictures and part numbers. I will try to PM you it over, if not, PM me you e-mail address and i will send to you.

Hi Rav,

Please could you send me a copy of that .pdf too?

I am having trouble with gear selection at the moment and apart from investigating the clutch hydraulic cylinders i am also thinking of improving the linkage too - while i'm in there sort of thing...

Cheers,

Ed

Any chance I could have a copy of it also if thats ok and not too much hassle, would really appreciate it as going to tackle mine soon also. Will me PM you my email if thats cool, thanks

If you want a copy of this please PM me.

Or if someone can show me how to embed a pdf file into the forum, that would be great.
