Slow turnover

My 86 944 starts each time, but it does seam to turn over slowly (like the battery is flat) then it spins and starts, does anybody else have this issue?

how should I remedy this, I don't feel like buying a new battery just to see if it is just that (measured voltage and it seams ok), or would it be something like the solenoid? or starter motor, if it is one of these how easy are they to swap out?

Nice pic!
Slow starters are pretty common and arguably normal. However I'd recommend you clean the connections on the starter and any other big earths as it can make a massive difference.

I'd be inclined to agree - if you're happy with the battery, have the starter off and clean it all up. Having just had to replace my starter and solenoid it makes an enormous difference, the car spins over very quickly now and starts almost instantly.

yep as peter says its the earth straps you need to remove and clean the connection surfaces. Its a tedious job but worth it. My S2 spins over like a spin cycle on a washing machine [;)] I think there is a schematic of earthing points on Clarkes Garage site or Pelicans. Pay particular attention to the engine to chassis straps. My S2 may have an additional strap from the cylinder head to bulkhead fitted by previous owner. ,

Common problem ... I'l be controversial and suggest it is due to general deterioraition of the whole system.

Cleaning the connections helps, as they will be grotty.

Changing the starter and solonoid helps, as they will be tired.

In my case, a new alternator (old one died) made the starting experience much much better. And cleaning the contacts a couple of months beforehand helped as well.

I do sometimes wonder what a brand-new S2 (or turbo) with new everything, would have started like. Brilliantly, I am guessing ...

ooooooooooooh controversial eh ?................[:D] Mmmmmmm not sure we can have that sort of behaviour on here you know ....we've got standards [;)]

Hi Ron

Still have the others, but could not resist the cups when I saw them... [:D], don't suppose you know anybody that wants a set of 5 spoke splits? my garage is not as big as yours [;)]

The odometer is functioning perfectly now, it was that cog, took the speedo apart and it was just like jelly, so cannibalized the other pod and used that.

Have not done anything else to it yet, still waiting for the belts to arrive, so i can do that, then I think its ready for the trip across Europe, Donnington to the Ring then to Reiems (or how ever you spell it)

I had this problem then one day it wouldnt start at all! I borrowed my dads battery charger (he has an '83 924 with similar issues[;)]) and the difference was night and day! Started much quicker and spun much faster!

Hi John,
Think the Cups look great. Glad odometer ok- so if you get cog from USA you'll have a spare
instrument pod. Will see if anyone wants wheels, think its actually Rheims but know where you
meant- lucky devil, still off to France and Le Man Classic in 8 weeks.
Dont forget club have tensioning tool to lend for belts.
Cheers Ron

Hi,

if i get the cog from the US, i still do not have a spare, as I broke the other odometer needle (did not grip it square ) [:(]

I knew you would know how to spell it, but you get the drift of where we are going, I have got my own belt tensioner coming, as soon I am off to spain and its something that I think i may need, as the 993 also needs that.

John

Hi Oops-thats the sort of thing i'd do-read intructions when all else fails.Best to have one as 993 needs it.
Enjoy trip try and take some photo's.
Cheers Ron
