sluggish starter motor

This has been discussed on the forum before and I know that 944s esp the S2 are known to be lazy when starting. I fitted what I thought was an upgraded battery to help but it hasn't made much difference. The car starts and runs fine, its just that it turns over slowly.

I can't really believe it was like this when new. So ideas/comments anyone?
 
Its an "uprated battery" but is it the right size battery. I now have very good cranking after fitting a HB096 battery as opposed to the smaller one. I used to fit the HB074 and cranking was allways slower.

I think the right size battery for the S2's big pistons and compression is the battery that fills the compartment (HB096) and requires you to secure the clamp at the far hole, not the smaller battery size hole, if that makes sense!
 
I must be easily pleased but one of my most satisfying jobs on the 944 was pulling the starter to bits cleaning every component regreasing where relevant and hearing the starter spin up at high speed - well alot higher than before.

Don't talk to me about starter motors! I've been of the road for 3 weeks as I split the solenoid cap putting the unit back on the car (don't ask!) and have now had 2 dud solenoids and counting.

My first S2 was slow in cranking but my latest shakes the car like a dog shakes a rat.
I noticed straight away that a previous owner has fitted new earth straps everywhere and huge battery terminals .
 
Mine turns over fairly slowly and has the added problem that it fails to spin over an odd time.. Solonoid [:mad:]
 
Mine turns over slowish,if there was an option I would prefer a zingy sounding started because the original sounds like an old ford[&:]
 
Hi all. I would not be unduly worried by the initially slower cranking speed of the 944. The engine has a very high compression ratio, and a very heavy crankshaft, so the poor starter has to cope with overcoming all that inertia and the first cylinder to come up to compression on its own. After that , the compressed cylinder and the mass of the crankshaft helps the starter to drive the next piston up, which is why I believe you get the familiar dee.e.e.e.r...........dak......dak..dak.. pattern to starting.

My Turbo is noticibly better intially than my old 944s and of course the turbo is only 8.5 to 1 compared to the 944s of 10.3 IIRC.
