Small key - what is it for?

Hi, Happy New Year to everyone.

My 944 cab came with a main key - standard Porsche key with light, an alarm / mobiliser key which inserts into a small slot prior to starting the car and another small metal porsche key. (Two sets of everything).

Does anyone know what the small metal key is for? It is about the size of a padlock key and is branded Porsche.

Also if anyone knows of any 944 1990 handbooks going around let me know. My car came with everything BUT the handbook and the cabriolet suppliment.

Thanks in advance ..FB

If your car originally had an alarm it is probably something to do with that. My car still has an old alarm control box/siren fitted on the bulkhead. There is a slot for a key in the box. I think one of my sets of keys also came with a small key similar to the one you describe, but I have never tried using it in the alarm just in case something goes wrong!

Not alarm (I don't think) if the key is branded Porsche. The H&P PA100 alarm (which was the one that dealers had fitted) didn't have a key slot in it.

I'm with John in guessing locking alloy wheel bolts.

Hi Oli
I have the same key in my set and its for the locking studs. They are like sleeves which go over the stud...They sort of click when you put them on and you need the key to take the sleeve off.... Mine is a MY87 Turbo with 16" Teledial wheels

It could be that the locks for the wheel nuts are rusted up and the key wont slot in. I had to take all my locking nuts off with pliers, and have just left them off.

According to my manual there are 2 keys supplied with the battery operated light, one key of a slimmer design for keeping in your wallet. Vehicles with lockable wheel nuts are supplied with 3 identical, small keys. Copies of these keys cannot be supplied.

Thanks everyone for their help. Sounds like old locking nuts as I now have cups with a profiled socket. I did think of the alarm but could never find a box under the bonnet anyway.

I think it it safe now however to remove from the keyring.

Thanks again..FB

I still have my original locking nuts and key. They were bloomin' awkward SOB's. I've kept them for prosperity though and the key is still on my key-ring.
