Small oil leak 996

Hi

I would be grateful if anyone could comment on whether I should take my car in for an early srvice to sort out a very small oil leak that has developed. The leak appears to be in the middle of the engine in line with the rear wheels and by some hoses. The car 996 is very low mileage 28k on a 2000 plate - many thanks

If it's in the middle of the car, around the engine/gearbox interface. then it sounds like the dreaded Rear Main Oil Seal to me. Best bet would be to get it checked out. If it is confirmed RMS, the general concensus of opinion is to do nothing but keep an eye on it until you need a new clutch, when it will add £20-ish to the cost. Unless you have the warranty, of course,in which case you are covered.

Hi,

I had a similar leak dead centre, ended up being the sump plug washer. Cost 68 pence.

Either way defo needs looking at. If it is RMS then worth getting the clutch changed if needed as will save you a few quid off labour.

Regards Alan

Doh need to read replies better[:)]

...Alan, I must be lucky... still bone dry under the 996 and looking pretty good under the boxster!

hello

It will add more than £20 to the bill if done properley as it would need the rear main seal, intermediate shaft seal and bolts replacing on the back of the crankcase, not to mention flywheel bolts too!
