Small Oil Leak

[993 C4]

Chaps....just taken my wife's '97 993 Targa Tip out to fill it up with V-Power and noticed a few small traces of oil on the garage floor. She uses it daily, and I dipped the oil on my return and it is still virtually full up, so hopefully not to bad a leak !

Rocker cover gaskets perhaps ??

Hi,

Yes it could be the rocker cover gaskets, but the oil tends to drip onto the hot exhaust so this is usually accompanied by oil smoke.

Best bet is to remove the engine tray and have a good look.

Can be the small oil filter slackening off. Another quarter turn will sort.

Many thanks for your replies chaps. I'm now away for a few days but on my return I'll drop the plastic tray down and have a good search....but will check the small oil filter first !

Maybe the cam covers leaking from the bolt holes, very common, billet alloy ones are the way to go!

Cam covers don't tend to cause drips on the garage floor in my experience. If they were leaking that bad you would certainly have the plumes of blue smoke when the car is warmed up as the oil dripping onto the heat exchangers burns off that pp spoke of.

It could possibly be the small oil filter. These can rust causing small pinholes that are very effective at squirting out oil when under pressure. They can get very bad very quickly resulting in a lot of lost oil. Mine rusted within 18 months, that is six months before Porsche say it needs to be changed [8|]

Agree - cam covers most unlikely. Also, please ensure you check the oil level with engne running and engine hot. That's the only way you can get a true reading.

Impossible to guess what is leaking without looking, but important to do so before driving too far, I would say.
