i beleave there is a cheaper version than the smart top ive herd of people selling these for around £40 or so but cant seem to find anyone selling these at the min .does anyone know where i might beable to get one for my 986
thanks in advane foe any advice[:)]

I see you have a 986.

Just a word of caution. If you have the "pre-facelift" (plastic rear window model) then you can only really use the smarttop to put the roof up - you will still have to stop halfway and put the crease in the rear window on the down cycle...
(Of course if you have a rear-glass aftermarket roof then this doesn't apply!

Also be aware that just because you can open a 987 roof at up to 30 mph does not mean you can do the same in a 986. We've had reports of roof mechanisms being damaged by opening 986 roofs whilst moving. Don't underestimate the speed of a headwind in addition to your speeedo readout [&:]

987's have a different meachanism - much strenghthened.

cheers for the info mark.do you know anywhere that sell the cheaper version of this?

There is a no-cost option.

Use your finger (or your partner's (PC moment)) with the handbrake on 1 notch.

thought the car had to be out of gear.....[;)]

Less than 5 MPH (spoiler light on) and the handbrake microswitch on is all that is required.

the original relay can be "modified" to allow similar operation, you simply remove one of the pins on the relay (can't remember what one though) and apply the handbrake one notch, so speeds up to 30 mph are possible.
Stopping the roof halfway down will prolong the life of the hood or you could just use it as Porsche intended and buy a glass screen replacement hood when it eventually splits.

I think the relay modification is detailed on Porsche Pete's Boxster Board. Or try the Renntech site. I seem to remember something to do with grounding Pin #15 to bypass the handrake.

May take a bit of searching though...
