Smelly windscreen wash

Grateful for advice on cleaning out the windscreen wash reservoir. Using the headlamp and screen washers yesterday a smell of very bad eggs appeared in the car. Traced it to the water in the windscreen wash tank which I admit has been there some weeks. Pumped all the liquid out through the washers and added about half a pint of cheap household diluted disinfectant to the tank but the smell is still there. I suspect the tank needs a thorough wash through but unless there is a drain tap I can see no easy way of doing it other than filing/re-filling several times and pumping out through the washers. Any other ideas, deoderisers, sugestions welcome. [:'(]

Watch out! Windscreen water can contain legionnaires [:'(].. If you don't add screenwash

Bicarbonated soda?

If it's algae, you might be able to get something appropriate from your local garden centre. Not sure what it might do to your paintwork though.

Spooky, my kids have been complaining about my smelly screenwash. It absolutely stinks. I thought it was the Porsche screen wash that came with the car. I was about to post about it then saw this.

I was thinking of filling and spraying with normal blue screenwash rather than the Porsche green stuff. Or maybe a small drop of bleach in the tank and flush through?

Thanks for all the advice. At the moment I have about a litre of mild disinfectant and water mix in the reservoir and it already smells sweeter. Point taken on legionaires but I always add screen wash.

Advice from local OPC is to remove inner wheel liner, remove pump motor from bottom of reservoir and thoroughly wash through with a hose. Might give it a go if I can get the liner off.

Given that it is a 7 litre reservoir it would seem sensible not to fill it up very much unless going on a long journey in the winter time. That way it might reduce the amount of time the water is left standing to get stagnant.

Also 7 litres = more weight = <performance

Job done. wheel arch liner (rear half) removed - thanks Richard for drawing. This exposed the reservoir tank and enabled the washer motor to be prised out of its grommet. Horrible, gungy, smelly water cascaded out. Flushed through with hose pipe several times and flushed the windscreen and headlamp washer hoses as well with fresh water. Re-inserted motor in grommet and re-fitted liner. Have left reservoir to dry before putting in about 1-2 litres plus screen wash. Tank filler area already smells neutral so hopefully all done. Lesson learned.

I bought some Baby bottle steriliser tablets. Popped two of them in the tank and filled it up. The smells gone, so thanks for the advice!! Probably still needs a flush out at some time, but for now problem sorted.
