Smoke coming from front seat in 911

Hi,

I'm extremely worried. My daughter has had a number of problems with her Porsche 911 Carrera since she had it in January (not sure what year it is, but it's about 10 years old).

Today's has been the most worrying. She had a problem with the driver's seat so the car went to a garage that the Porsche garage use . She got it back last week and today she left work, drove a few yards down the road and noticed smoke coming from the driver's seat! Obviously she jumped straight out but was understandably very shaken and it's now sitting in a garage waiting to be taken back to where it was bought so they can locate the problem.

Does anyone know what this could be? I'm very angry and worried as I don't understand how it can be taken to a garage for repair of the seat and come back unsafe like this!

Hi,

You've posted in the wrong forum - the youngest 3.2 Carrera is now almost twenty five years old. Since you're not sure of the age of the car, I suggest you post in the 993, 996 and 997 sections to cover all the bases.

Sorry I can't be of more help - good luck finding a solution.

What was the original problem with the seat?

If it has some form of electric adjustment it's likely that one of the motors has burnt out.

I'd get it back to the garage for rectification ASAP.

Ah, I think it's a 996, I'll post on that forum too, many thanks. :)

I think it was something to do with the adjustment, I don't think it would move back. It's had numerous problems as I say, the seat was the latest. The car went back to the dealers, who sent it to their garage. They had to wait a few days for a part and when it was fitted the seat worked ok. So I don't know why one of the motors would have burnt out? Is that shoddy mechanic's work or just bad luck do you think?

And yes, my daughter has a garage just around the corner from work so they've got it at the moment, but I'm very angry and worried that they let her have it back when it's obviously still got a serious fault. There could have been a fire, it really scared her as it was coming from under her seat.

Many thanks.

If the garage the dealer is using is just a general motor shop, for peace of mind I'd suggest you take it to a Porsche independent specialist.

Good luck

If it's a 996 with full electric seat adjustment I suspect that there will be a number of motors plus a lot of wiring where shorts could occur. There could be other modules too.

Difficult to point the finger but if the problem occured after the repair, it sounds as though the 'garage' is responsible. Was the dealer a Porsche Centre and, if not, I presume that they sold your daughter the car and use the 'garage' for their repair work? As Beaky has said, you'd be better taking the car to a Porsche specialist who's much more likely to know what they're doing.

Glad that your daughter's OK and hope that she gets the problem fixed soon.
